have been meaning to buy a couple of os maps of my local area to see if there are any trails i dont know about and get a couple for further afield "natural" days but which type
explorer or land ranger whats the difference?
My personal preference is for 1:50k for Scotland and some of the less densely populated parts of England and Wales and 1:25k for down south. Phillips navigator 1:100k is good for road rides and carries a fair few tracks but no details of the ROW status.
i used to buy explorer but you can cycle across an entire map in a couple of hours. i now tend to go for landranger although trying to find fp/ bw in towns can be more difficult.
Landranger are 1:50k, Explorer(used to be called Outdoor Leisure) 1:25k. I find explorer much more useful as you can usually see field boundaries in farmland which helps a lot most places. If you're touring long distances, such as walking the pennine way, you end up carrying more of them though.
1:25k every time, especially for your intended purpose in your local area. You'll get much more detail which will help in spotting potential points for exploration.
Laminated ones!
1:50k for general area overview.
1:25k if you really want to get to know an area.
But waterproof ones mean they last longer than 5 minutes if you ever go out in the rain.
Memory map - I have all of the UK, and you can print them off to your desired scale, and only for the bits you're interested in 8)
Should cost a packet though...
"should cost"!!!! would that be admiting that you got them from a not quite legit source?
The OS shop has a three for the price of two on waterproof explorer maps just now - fill yer wellies!
Get an older version of Memory map on ebay for little - the maps dont change, the software does. So if you just want to endlessly print maps of your choice thats the best way to go.

Absolutely not, no no no. Never. That would be illegal!
Multimap is really AWESOME though. It talks to my GPS and everything!
