do you think a 50mm stem and 710 bar combo would be a good choice for a 5?

How tall are you and what's the frame size? I run a 70mm stem on my 16" 5 and am 5'7" in my best heels, cockpit feels perfick for me. I did contemplate a 50mm, don't see why it wouldn't work.

5'7 on a tall day. 16" frame. Admittedly saddle is right back as it always was on an online seatpost. Changed the type of stuff I was riding so I ditched the xc length 90mm stem. Thought my climbing would suffer but not in reality. Made a big difference on super steep stuff. Get a £22 Hussefelt one off CDC or the classifieds and try it out.

It depends on what height/shape you are. Just buy a cheap stem and whack it on to try it. Or take it to your LBS and ask nicely to try a few different stems.

As above you can only really tell by trying a couple, if you have a friendly LBS I'm sure they'll loan you one to try.

Gut feeling is that a 50mm might be a bit short at that height on an 18" frame, but I know nowt!

i'm 6ft on an 18" five. I have a 70mm, tried a 60mm and it was great going down but a bit short on the climbs. Bars are 711mm

am 6' with an 18" 5
I run a 50mm stem but needed a Thompson lay back seat post for XC duties.
why run such a short stem when I have to run a layback.
cos its just brilliant on the downs. used to run a 65mm stem which was fine, this is better

My advice would be that whatever bike your using, you should have a 50mm stem and bars to suit. That way your weight is in the right place for riding fast.

I am 5ft 11 and i ride an 18inch Orange 5 AM
and have a wide bar with a 65mm sunline zero rise stem.

I have thought of using a shorter stem as above it puts
you in the right position and great for attacking the trails
and descents.

Think you put the same question on bike radar
I answered there under a name called Black

what geetee says, I use 50mm with 685 bars and one spacer between clamp n headset and its bang on. I also have a layback post which when raised opens up the reach for xc just right for me.

i'd be inclined to run either 70mm stem with those bars or 750mm bars and 50 mm stem. which is what i'm running on a 456 - i'm a similar height to you too.

have tried of few bar widths and stem lengths on my 18" five and settled for a 50mm stem 710mm bar as this combo suits my local regular route of long techy but not very steep UPS and steep, long, rock gardens and 2/3 foot drops on the DOWNS.
