As title are there any recommended online retailers for motorbike gear, like chain reaction/wiggle etc. for clothing, helmets etc not parts.

Cheers

For helmets, I would strongly suggest you buy from somewhere where you can try them on.
Not all helmets are sized the same. I was measured and have a 62cm head. I needed two helmets (1 for rainy days and 1 for not rainy). I ended up with one XL and one XXL.

I can recommend Helmet City, they're great for price and range.

I used them when I was replacing a couple of old helmets, but I knew the size I wanted and was going for the same make and model.

Worth going somewhere to try them on as Iolo suggests, fit is really important.

I went to J and S a couple of weeks ago they appear to have a big range, no idea about relative prices though.

Another vote for a local store when you're buying a helmet - I bought a new one just this week and had to try on at least 4 before finding one I liked.

Anything to do with clothing and helmets, just go to your largest local store and try/feel etc.

Cheap (full-face) helmets are usual just that, cheap and nasty and not somewhere you'd want to spend any time - never mind have an accident in.

Better to go with sale helmets - I use to look at ones that were in rider colours, where they'd got a new replica.

Also with clothing, you need to try it while actually sat on a motorbike, otherwise the leg length is always wrong etc.

Easy, think of a number and then double it.

I will do that but I'm just trying to find a couple of websites to have a look at and get some ideas of costs, I'll go into a local shop at the weekend for some face to face interaction.
I was thinking £400 for helmet, gloves, jacket, trousers and boots? I know you can spend a lot more but just looking at getting going.

You might just do it for that. For £600 you'd get much better kit. Don't expect it to be waterproof though..

If you are near Chesterfield then check out the CMC Factory outlet

Top tip: get some cheap Decathlon plastic trousers and jacket - non breathable, cost less that 30 quid in total, you'll need to go up a size to make sure it fits - and wear them over your protective stuff when the weather's really shite. Makes a huge difference both in rain and cold protection.

I go to J and S, best of both worlds with website and real shops... http://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/

They took over some of the Hein Gericke shops when they went pop a couple of years back. In fact a quick Google shows that HG are coming back, reopening at the end of this month!

Sportsbikeshop have been good for my requirements. I purchase my AGV K5 helmet and Richa drift boots locally as I wanted to try them on first. i managed to secure 10% discount on the kit and any future purchases.. Result!

I only purchased my leathers and gloves online as they could not source what I wanted.

Agree, but as the saying goes - "there is no such thing as bad weather, just poor choice of clothing..."

I use to change my helmet every year, buying at one of the big shows or the likes of J&S in the sale - mainly because I did a lot of miles (upto 100 miles per day) commuting.
Gloves are best bought to be waterproof, even summer ones - these can cost. Rukka 🙂
Boots I went through a few until buying a pair of goretex Daytona's, they lasted 10 years.
And I either wore a set of leathers backed up with a cheap(ish) waterproof jacket and trousers or lately a two-piece Hein Gericke police-style textile set.

Have a look in charity shops, e.g. I gave all my old gear away inc boots - all in pretty decent nick.

Lots of good barely used kit on eBay if you know sizes, ( not helmets obviously).
Just picked up an un- used £100 back protector for £25, worth a look.
