When my old insurance policy expired in October last year, I went and bought out a new policy with another company and forgot to cancel my old direct debit. The old insurace company have been taking money from my account for insurance I don't need, so is there a way of getting this money back? I've now cancelled the direct debit. Its from an account I don't use much so I've not realised until now. Do I approach the bank for a refund or the company? Many thanks.
i work in a bank and the bank will give you a refund no problem please let me know how you get on with this matter.
Hi fudge thanks for your reply. I will go in the bank and ask for a refund. I will post here the outcome.
the only problem you may have is that you didn't tell the old insurance company you didn't want to renew through them. so they might have you signed up for another year.
A bit of an update. I have been to the bank and cancelled the direct debit today, they said to contact the insurance company to get them to refund the money.

I thought once it expires you have to renew either let them know or find another company.
We've just been through something similar. Old company tried to automatcally renew. It's taken a few phone calls (using http://www.saynoto0870.com/ to find their real number), they needed proof that we were insured with someone else. Resolved now.
ive had this before, you have to be really careful and read the small print, i think it was with the post office online they had a 'auto renew button' that was automatically clicked, i didnt notice this, changed insurer and they had me for 2 months worth.
they basically told me to f** off!
