If I were to use a Wireless N Network adapter would performance be slower than if I were to connect using a network cable.

I would prefer the wireless option (as with my laptop) but not if speed or performance will be sacrificed ... or shouldn't it make any difference.

All the best.

Wireless N Network adapter

Good luck with that one.

But yes, technically, if you were to use wireless it would be slower than cable. But there's only one well established method of connecting an xbox using wireless and that's using the microsoft adaptor. I've used others but they're less than reliable. How about ethernet over mains? It's worked well for me in the past.

Samuri,

Cheers, I was on about using the official Xbox live adapter that retails for £50. I don't want to buy it though if just simply plugging in an ethernet cable will result in faster speeds.

Now I'm looking on the Xbox Live site regarding setup and it's going on a about selecting a wireless security: WEP, WPA, WPA2, or No Security and inputting the password. I've no idea what all that's about and when the fella from Virgin set it up I was never given a password, or at least I can't recall it. AAAAAAAAAARGGGGG 😈

So did your laptop connect straight away by itself or did the virgin bloke set that up for you?

The password is normally on the bottom of the router.

I set it up but I can't recall assigning or using a password.

Well you should be able to look on your laptop and see the name of your access point. Then connect to that with your xbox and see if it prompts you for a password, it may not be protected.

samuri, Phildean.

Cheers guys. I looked at the router and found the netgear website that explained a few things, which I'm in the process of reading and applying.

All the best.

Yeah but if the router's not by the xbox then that's a no goer.

Just bought the wireless adapter Saturday (£48 from Game) because i've moved the room around and couldn't get the ethernet cable to the Xbox tidily.
The only difference i've noticed is that when streaming movies from the laptop there is a delay whilst the film 'loads' to the Xbox. This never used to happen with an ethernet connection (it just connected up and started playing the film) usually) but its a only a minor delay - about 20secs - and then it all works ok.
PS it was the cheapest i could find it and i had to convince the guys in the shop to pricematch their website. They tried to say it was the old adapter that was reduced - its not, its the newer one on the site.

It makes a small difference you get lag spikes during games with wireless which can be a real pain in the arse.

I've gone with an Ethernet cable in the end. It wasn't as necessary to go wireless with the Xbox as it was with the laptop.

Just downloaded some new stuff for Mass Effect 2 off Live, which was good.

I'm wondering if it's worth linking up the Xbox's media centre with my laptop?
