Dougal is getting on a bit, he's 13. Last year his arthritis flared up, but with medication and shorter walks he seemed to be okay. I was away for a couple of days this week, but when I got back he didn't give me the usual bouncy welcome home. My wife said he had been quiet and not able to poo. Saw the vet today and it looks like a tumour. Going back on Thursday but it doesn't look good. He's had a long life, we got him from a rescue home when he was a puppy. He's faithfully tolerated three children, and hasn't so much as growled at their poking.

Sorry to hear that Rik. Take some comfort from the thought that he's had a long and happy family life and he and your family have been lucky to have found each other. My brother lost his Dalmatian of 14 years last week. It's tough.

We had to go through this 3 weeks ago with our 12 year-old lab - a visit to the vet and an ultrasound revealed a large unknown 'mass' in her chest and she was bloated with fluids which was indicative of pending organ failure. Although she was still happy and active we were likely to face a very serious collapse so took the agonising decision to bring her back that evening. We spent one final day doing the things she loved - eating and visiting the places she loved. I held her in my lap and shed copious tears as she slipped away - heartbreaking but the best thing we could do for her under the circumstances.

We delayed the decision with a previous elderly dog and it was agony watching him suffer and it was just as painful in the end. Hardest decision to take but better to let them go painlessly.

Thanks all. Just taken him up to his favourite place to paddle. We've not been up for a while as he's not able to walk far, but I drove up the hill today. Unfortunately the medication he's been given today means that he needs to come off his arthritis meds, so it's unlikely he'll be able to walk back up there again.

He’s had a long HAPPY life, we got him from a rescue home when he was a puppy.

Fixed it for you riklegge.

You've done the best for your hound and he looks a smashing fella. Good luck with him.

We went through this last easter with my 12 1/2 year old chocolate lab. He had Spondolosis in the spine and was getter slower and having accidents in the house. He would have goodd days and bad days but seemed to cope better in cold weather and we knew come the summer he would be away. We woke up one sunday to find he couldnt even climb the stairs to come and lie with us in bed. The rear legs had totally gone. Utterly devastated we had to do what was right and Im not saying Dougal is near that yet but you will know when the time comes. As others have said you have given the dog a great life and he has given you 13 years of love. This wont make it much easier when the time comes, but spoil him and let him knows hes loved. The hardest part since our dog passed was not having the big lump to put your arms round when you feel down so take every opportunity and I wish you all the best.

Very difficult at the moment but you'll still have loads of great memories of what sounds like a wonderful companion.

He has certainly given us some funny memories. On one occasion my sister in law had made herself some lunch. Dougal (who had earlier on eaten some horse s**t) chose that moment to vomit all of it back up around the kitchen. After cleaning up, SiL turned round to find Dougal tucking merrily into her lunch.

Feel for you chap. We had Nelson, our 17yr old rescue mongrel, put to sleep last Friday. He was basically old and knackered, and if was time. I'm not going to lie, it was effing awful, and its been really, really weird without him around the house.

However we, like you, have great memories, and that's the main thing.

Sorry for the self indulgence, but another pic. The black box is a model of him that my daughter made at school.

I remember when this happened to our greyhound. It was sad but obviously the right thing. The lights just went out in her eyes and she wasn’t the same dog.

Very sad - you have my thoughts.

He seemed a bit more perky this morning, but I won't really know any more until Thursday. The vet was pretty sure it was a tumour so it will depend what they find on Thursday as to whether we operate or if it's dognitas.

And thank you for all the kind words, I know in the grand scheme of things people lose pets all the time, but he's been part of the family for 12 years and it feels like losing a friend.

I've been in this place far too many times over the years, and I just want to say that what ever you decide to do, do what's best for Dougal. I've made choices in the past based on my own selfish feelings that I don't want to lose my friend and still regret it now, it's better to let them go peacefully and without the added suffering or stress. Sorry mate.

Lovely dog - it's not nice when you have to make these choices.

feel for you, haven't had to do it with a dog for many years but we lost two cats a few years back about 9 months apart. One we left too late and had a horrible last 36 hours in hindsight. The other we probably did a few days too early, but I'd far rather that.

Even at these trying times..... dognitas. Chapeau.

I just laughed at the lunch anecdote. Naughty Dougal.

What a shame.
