Bit early and i guess everything can and probably will change, I have an interview tomorrow in Llanwern (Newport,Gwent), i am in Chester, so have a pleasant 150/200 mile drive later today. I can do M6/M5/M4 which is c200miles or i can do A5/A49 and come down through Wrexham, Craven Arms, Hereford, which is nearer 150miles.

I assume the motorway will be cleared of any snow if only through volume of traffic and should be reasonably free of ice, but will the shorter route be cleared/gritted/etc? I would prefer to do the shorter route as it is more scenic.

Hi mrmo - I live between newport and monmouth, so can only speak for the last part of your journey. It's ****in' cold but has been very dry, so the roads are absolutely clear down here, for now at least.

Good luck with your interview.

i live about 10 miles from Llanwern, the main roads are ok at the moment, but there is 'apparently' about 30cm of snow to come tonight/early morning

play it by ear mate i'd say and stick to main roads M6/M5/M4, oh and good luck

www.Traffic-wales.com

The live camera feeds should give you some idea of the road conditions as well as the info bit.

For England try

Fair dump of snow in Herefordshire earlier this afternoon but main roads passable with care (earlier). Snowing lightly in Monmouth at the moment but not settling although it is settling on the hills around the town. As said above, forecast is for heavy snow in SE Wales tonight.

Give them a ring / email to check on conditions. Be great if you fight your way down from Chester but they don't make it into work locally ๐Ÿ˜•

Little or no snow here in Welshpool

Llandrindod / Llanwrtyd-wells area is reporting 5"-6" of snow at present with all schools shut

Speaking from experience, even in decent conditions that journey is best made on the motorway unless you're happy to spend a fair bit of your journey sat behind various agricultural vehicles and HGVs.

train journey from Chester direct to Newport is beautiful. Train would be my choice if it was me.

The A483 is one of the worst roads in GB - agree with train comments

well i am in Cheltenham as made sense to leave early and break the journey.

Have rung them and will decide in morning whether it is worth risking the drive. They weren't sure if one of the interviewers would be able to make it from Chepstow!
