Said I would take the Mrs away next month and would like somewhere down that way.

Anywhere nice which doesn't cost the earth?

I always stay in the Thatch Inn, Croyde, when I'm down there to catch a few waves.

http://www.brend-hotels.co.uk/hotels/devon.cfm have a few nice hotels in Barmstaple, Bideford, Saunton, etc. You can usually haggle them down to £40pppn at the Royal or Park if they're not busy & they include evening meals in some deals.

Not really fussed where in North Devon is just a nice place to be and its pretty close to Bristol (where we live).

Thanks for the suggestions so far, hotel on the beach looks good but they have no availability the weekend we want to go.

We stayed at the Watergate Bay Hotel - http://www.watergatebay.co.uk/

Really, really nice. Fully styled by White Stuff so if that's not your aesthetic then avoid!

The Hoops Inn, between Bideford and Bude. Good food and beer.

Good access for the Hartland (how devon used to be) and its beaches and North Cornish beaches.

Go looking for Spekes Mills Mouth, swell pulling beach/reef break.

Used to live around there so not sure about the rooms, otherwise very nice
