Need to part ex my current saloon, want something i can get a whole bike in the back of, ideally two with at the very least the front wheel off but there is nothing that makes me go oooh I'd love one of those.
Any ideas? Only needs to carry two passengers & be low RFL is possible
2nd hand, budget up to 13k

Depends on how much you want to dismantle your bike to get it in. For minimal dismantling i.e. front wheel only, i'd say you're looking at a small estate like an A4/Focus sizes thing. Mondeo/A6 size cars don't really get you much more as you still have to dismantle to the same degree and lie the bikes on their side, but obviously being bigger makes loading and unloading a bit easier. If you want them upright but with wheel removed then you're into MPV stye things like C-Max's/SMax's and Galaxies. Whole bikes and you're into van territory.

If it only ever needs to carry two folk, some kind of pickup with a hard cover for the back? Nissan Navara or Mitsubishi L200?

Or go for a Transporter and pimp out the back.

I'm in the same position now with a slightly lower budget of 10k. Best I've found so far is a BMW 116d M Sport which I think I'll go for.

That said if my budget was 13k you'd get a Mercedes A Class AMG pack I sat in last week. Really really nice inside and out.

Transporter T5 is also a decent option but high on tax and you don't get low miles for that money

I quite like my Seat Leon estate. Not to big, £20 road tax, 150 bhp 2.0 Diesel, amazing MPG. A very good Auction buy. 14 plate 22k and a couple of grand below your budget.

£13k may get you the Octavia vrs diesel estate. 180+ bhp and efficient. Loads of room and cheap to run with a good if not awesome driver experience. Go DSG with paddles.

Whole bikes and you're into van territory.

With the back seats down, I could get my hooligan Inbred 567 in the back of my Octavia hatchback with only the seatpost removed - two will fit, with a bit of care, and a couple of big blankets, especially the thick grey ones removal companies use, to cover the inside and between the bikes.
Personally I'd be looking at a B-Max/C-Max, or possibly an S-Max, great fun to drive, big rear door, higher rear roofline than an estate, but best of all are the sliding rear doors which give much better access to the rear space than regular doors. Basically they're Fiesta/Focus/Mondeo MPV's, I particularly like the B-Max on twisty roads.
Plus you get a heated screen with the Fords, which with weather like we're getting at the moment, really can't be overstated just how easy it is to get going on cold mornings.

How good looking are they eh ... I like.

Go for one with automatic gear ...

I am normally a Toyota person but this Ford Tourneo Connect is one that I would buy ...

Ford Galaxy. You have to take the front wheel off to get a 29er in but other than it's great.

EDIT: off the bike obviously. You can take the front wheel off the car if you want, but it won't help get the bike in, and it affects the handling quite badly.

It's got a bloomin hatchback FFS! It's what I'm getting next (budget allowing) looks swag, meant to drive nicely and well equipped compared to the same spec 3 series.

Yes, some of them are modified for carrying wheel chairs but to me that is not a problem because other van type MPVs do that too.

Mind you in the far east large estate cars are used as hearse ... 😛

Is there something wrong with a disability vehicle then?
You can get a Ford F150 for few bucks and it'll have great bike carrying capacity.

So do B-Max, C-Max, S-Max, Galaxy, Zafira, Peugeot 3008, Peugeot Partner...
Because all of them are used as Motability cars.
But then, so are Merc A/B Series, BMW 1/3/5, Mazda MX-5, Golf GTD, Touran...
B-Max:

I get a 20" framed 29er in my kia ceed 5 door with both wheels on. Don't get how people with estates still have to take the wheel off. It takes a bit of wiggling and the handlebar down the side of the driver's seat but it's far less hassle than taking a wheel off, fitting a brake block and having to remember to bring the axle.

So my advice would be get something you want to own (not a kia ceed) and wrestle your bike in any old way you can 😀

I'd like to know where your looking for a new caddy with decent spec for 13k!

If you're only transporting 2 passengers I'd be looking at a transit connect l2 limited, you'll pick up a 16 plate well specced one for 12k plus vat, bit of discount should see you under 13k all in. Why have a car when you can have a van if 3 seats is enough?!

You don't have to spend 13k+ to find a decent caddy, I bought an immaculate 2013 (reg Nov 2013) 1.6tdi highline for £6.3k a few weeks ago, elec windows/elec heated mirrors, AC, DAB radio, parking sensors, cruise control, leather steering wheel, alloy wheels, admittingly it does have 109k miles which probably put folk off but full VW service history. It was used by Benfield VW (now Lookers VW) as their parts delivery vehicle between dealers in north England/south Scotland so at least it's been well looked after. Just had the engine oil analysis report back from Millers oil and they said it's in excellent condition engine wise so it's off to superchip soon for a remap/rolling road session, 150bhp and 325nm torque should make it a better driving vehicle as the standard tune is quite lacking.

Perhaps have a look at the caddy maxi as they have rear seats and you can still get bikes in the back no problem, very easy to convert to a mini camper type of vehicle

4 series is a boot, so you need the drop-down seat option.

Although when I mentioned I could get my bike in our new one my wife commented that if you can get a bike in you could also get a coffin in there too...

Needless to say I use our other car 🙂

Does the badge make a difference to you? What about age? Mileage? Petrol/diesel?

Lots of boring cars being mentioned above, unlikely to make someone go oooh unless you're a bit odd 😀

That was my exact thought as soon as I saw that, round here I think they come with the fish symbol pre attached from the dealer & the fog light switch glued in.

But, but they're good cars. RD hasn't said he's into some blingo fashion accessory nor rabid street racer.

Versos are quiet, comfortable, built well. Cheap to run (low RFL, that was a stipulation) and 2014 1.6D-4D can be had with <20k on the clock from Branded dealerships for his budget.

The Fish symbolism is only part of the upgrade available.

Passat estate every time. We've had four bikes and four humans inside ours, admittedly two of the humans were small ones but it regularly take two bikes and two adults and three is OK if you remove all the wheels.

It's not an exciting car to drive but with DSG it's an excellent long-haul load carrier. You might be able to get a B8 at your budget now.

A caddy's hardly inspiration compared to a Toyota verso....

And it's for that reason I didn't suggest a blingo.

Good wee cars for cyclists but it doesn't sound like it's for the OP.

A car you lie + bike rack?

Pick up with a hard cover as per Flying Ox (love ours although a twin cab).

You're never going to get many useful answers without a little more detail as to what yuo're after. A car you can make progress in but fit a bike in every other weekend? A car for carrying bikes and others around at sedate pace? Comfort? Style? Space?

I've never not liked Mondeo hatchbacks in any spec or engine size. The big diesels are especially great at what they're designed to do.

Just before Christmas we traded in a Fiat 500 for a Tourneo Connect so that Abigale had more room for the bikes and wasn't relying on us for the shuttling.
Went for it rather than the van for the creature comforts, we were surprised that's what an 18 year old would chose but its not as bad as everyone makes out, she loves it.
Went for the Titanium 1.6 petrol eco boost with the six speed auto box. To get the full bike in with wheels attached you need to compress the forks to clear the rear roof shelf but she just lays it on the side.

for pure speed, obviously not. However for a feeling of 'specialness', a balanced chassis, a better seating position etc, I think sports cars still offer something over and above a hot hatch - it just it seems that these days, practicality is not it 🙂 back in the late 80s/early 90s it seemed most coupes\sports cars had hatches, now I can't think of one outside of the TT.

I think in terms of choice we're better off now. Practicality isn't going to be high up the list of considerations for most people who want a coupe or sports car. And if it is, well there'll probably be a hot hatch with a very similar power train that offers it. I know what you're saying but it's probably a niche within a niche and there are just better options.

5lab back in the late 80s/early 90s it seemed most coupes\sports cars had hatches,

Current Scirroco is the only one I can think of. Maybe the F-Type, but the boot doesn't look all that useable.

why ? what does it do better ? it doesnt look any better unless you drive it through halfords and lower it with bling wheels and other tat....and even thats subjective - its still just a van - with a similar internal capacity to a verso.

i just can't be arsed with the hassle of selling a £1000 car privately, i like the simplicity of just handing the keys over and using it as a deposit.

current car is a Nissan Note i've had from new, it's 10 years old, done 85k on a 1.4 petrol and WBAC recon it's worth £1060 in good condition, which the paint work isn't.

i want to put a bike in whole without taking the wheels off. mostly a fat bike and sometimes two. i don't want anything bling, i don't want a berlingo as the reviews on reliability scare me.

i like the look of the torneo but £13k is really the top limit. £10k would be easier.

i currently do around 5k miles a year so a diesel wouldn't be ideal

MIL has a Tourneo Connect SWB which will take several bikes whole. They have the 1.0L petrol version, which drives fine even fully laden with Dive kit. Petrol engines are quite rare though, most are diesels.

If you want to do that then the Caddy Maxi Life ticks every box.
Unlike the Tourneo you don't have to compress the forks to put a full bike in.
7 seats IF you ever need an outing, 5 with a mahoosive boot,
4 with one full bike inside fulltime
3 with 2 full bikes inside full time
Twin sliding doors as standard
Tailgate
Will even take full size sheets of ply if you feel the need.
Standard kit in them is high spec, etc
I've had 5 adults, 5 bikes and 5 sets of kit plus spares in mine once before it was sold on to a friend and they still use it for the gardening business, 4 boys, bikes, tools, etc.

You would be mad not to go Electric, either full or hybrid everything else is just old stock getting cleared.

In your budget its probably non plug in hybrid, Lexus 200?

The newer berlingos are the 8 valve hdi, so the oil starvation to the turbo is sorted. just use the correct oil and change more frequently, all good.
Another plus point is it uses an Eloy additive which only needs replacing 60 to 80k. No regen issues, no adblue topping up.
I have a 62 plate, only issue has been ABS wire break, fixed under warrenty.

I have shown no interest in hybrid as we got ford escapes at work and were told the batteries would last 5 years and were more than the residual value of the vehicle, this hasn't proved true so far

so I just looked at that Lexus and theres some nice examples for 10k with full history and low miles, I would be interested to speak to someone who has owned an older hybrid to get their take

The CT200H is very small in the back. You can get a bike in it with the wheels off, front off just, but that's it. You maybe able to get another lying on top of the other one, but lie em' both down it is.

I had one for a 2 month "test" just before I bought my current car, nice it was, drove lovely, nippy but you have no space in the rear. All the electric gizmos are great, built very very well and a premium vehicle it is. But, ave mpg was 52, best 58, worst 37 so whilst a nice place to sit in, economical compared to small diesels it is just about/maybe less than current new age small diesel powered cars.
Also, battery life I was told is 9 years, then £5k to replace..

And I had a Prius for London running around in, don't get one, they're horrid.

I think the rear roof shelf is model specific on the Tourneo Connect and it's only on her 29er Enduro that she needs to compress the forks a bit. The other bikes clear it.

Jezza and captain slow showed that not to be the case in a road test.

If a full electric car meets your needs you would likely be able to cover that journey with other options.

Not exactly unbiased and now out of date, folk should keep up with the times.
A tesla with the ludicrous mode is faster than any petrol car, gets 300 miles from a charge and you can charge quickly and often freely in thousands of places.

Fossil fuel cars would be dead in the water if the manufacturers knew how to transition to elecrtric without killing their golden goose.

Google 'fully charged' if you want to learn or just quote the old duffer in a sports jacket

Not exactly unbiased and now out of date, folk should keep up with the times.
A tesla with the ludicrous mode is faster than any petrol car, gets 300 miles from a charge and you can charge quickly and often freely in thousands of places.

Well speaking of unbiased, yes the top of the range £139,000 Tesla Models P100d is right up there in 0-60 acceleration but weight and aerodynamics hold it back a bit as speeds get higher, or over 1/4 mile. Also if you want to "make progress" or just drive spiritedly it won't get anywhere near the quoted range. Less than half. And there appear to be about 20 Tesla Superchargers in the UK?

Yeti takes a full sus upright with wheels on. Remove front wheels and 3 bikes 3 people is doable.

I have no idea how you managed to get a bike in a Yeti with the wheels on and upright! Even with the front wheel removed my bike barely fitted in upright - the rear wheel had to go into the slight gap between the front seat and rear door to fit (29er)
2 bikes only just went in upright with all the seats removed too. I found there was barely enough room for the handlebars when upright - where the third bike would go with one seat remaining I have no clue!

Blimey, I see how you have done it, but still can't believe it! I'm sure there was no way I could get my Yeti ArcC in mine like that when I had it.

Happy to be corrected 🙂

Baffles people when i pull a fully built up bike from it. Everyones putting wheels back on and turning handle bars taking bikes out of hatches and estates. A full bike rolls out from a wierd little suv thing.

You dont have to use tesla chargers, you can charge at home or the other charge providers.

I realise I'm unlikely to convince people who still think 'jezza' is a thing and its not really relevant to this thread anymore but fossil fuel cars are as dead as a dodo.

And how much to buy a basic Tesla ?

What's the life span of them ?

No doubt it'll be the case one day but the future is not yet here. You'll still be an early adopter and it may well be the betamax given how destructive lithium mining is.

Tesla are pushing into battery tech in a big way trying to get away from lithium as a constituent part of their batteries
