Looks good. I’m considering getting myself set up with a PC and controls to start playing DCS. My Dad and brother are the computer experts so just seeking their advice as to what it will all set me back.. I suspect a fair amount.

Heard about DCS on the Fighter Pilot Podcast and lost an evening watching YouTube videos.

Looks good, but maybe it should have died with Meigs Field.

Hopefully MS will get a proper HOTAS stick out for the eggsbox before then...

I fancy a joystick for Falcon and maybe other stuff, but I don't want to go nuts. Can you get a cheap joystick with a throttle lever that's ok?

Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS is apparently the best "budget" stick I have no idea as I'm using an ancient Saitek X-52 pro, from before their QA went to shit.

Thrustmaster 1600 - stay away from Saitek.

Going to get the DCS F-14 and F-18 module, the Thrustmaster F-18 stick, a virpil base and a long throw extension and ****ing VR this winter.

Archer at the end of this ad will be me come December hahah

kin love a good flight sim. After putting in hundreds of hours on ms flight sim in the past I reckon i'd have a good shot at safely bringing in a passenger jet if the pilot/copilot suddenly died on a flight. The new one due next year looks amazing. better start saving for an rtx 2180ti!

Ha, that's exactly the conversation I had last night. I shudder at the thought.

Hardware requirements might not be as high as you're thinking, flight sims can do a lot with level of detail scaling since you're rarely close up to anything.

Not really my area of interest but I'd love to fly around sightseeing in VR.

re controllers I have a T16000M and the build quality is excellent. Uses a magnetic sensor which doesn't seem to get gummed up with dust or lose accuracy over time like the Saitek stick I had before. The button layout on the base isn't great but I don't have the HOTAS add-on which might improve it.

i had a go on Flight Sim 3.0 when I was about 11. I thought it was ok until I discovered a) there was nothing to shoot down, b)there were no missiles, and c) there was therefore no point 😆

Hah, a very similar experience to me. I know people enjoy different things but hyper realistic flight sims seems a strange idea to me. I watched someone streaming a flight sim on Twitch a while back (OK I get that's even less entertaining than flying in one yourself), he was doing some long real-time flight. He was already in the air on autopilot when I noticed the stream, watched briefly and checked back a few hours later and he was still just flying on autopilot (but constantly checking everything). I guess if sim hours still count towards pilot licence requirements I can see the point but otherwise???

Some sims do count, but I don't think ones you fly on your desktop at home do. Iirc it's got to be a full fidelity cockpit set up.

I'm not a fan of modern fast jet simulators, they're too finicky for me to sink the time into. Too many buttons! I'm more of a check control surfaces, set prop pitch to fine, set the mixture to rich, turn on the magnetos, prime, ignition and away pilot.

DCS has lots of realism toggles - 1 switch start - easy lock ons etc. They have a sister product called Flaming Cliffs as well, which has the same flight model but dumbed down systems - for a simpler experience.

If you like that kind of sim though, IL2 Stalingrad/Kuban/Moscow is probably a good place to start.

DCS also has some early 50s late 60s jets as well - which are a bit simpler.

IL2 is indeed what I have. (and war thunder, but that's not a real sim, even in sim mode;-)

"Will it run Crysis MS Flight Simulator?"

So much detail and textures they have to stream it from the internet. Very impressive.

I'm in and will be getting the top version.
But then I'm a GA type and currently run XPlane 11 with paid for (about £25 a go) Cessna, Diamond and Piper aircraft models, so the additional cost for so many extra aircraft (that I am interested in flying) is nothing really.

If you want to fly buses, then it might not be so good.

I'm hoping that all of the additional software I use to power my cockpit will soon migrate to work with MSFS.

While the scenery isn't that far ahead of what I currently have in xplane, the fact that it will just work is a big draw for me - although I enjoy tinkering, it can be a pain in the rectum when it doesn't work quite as you'd expected!

No VR support at launch and when it does come later in the year it'll be HP Reverb only initially. On that basis I'm out for the next few months.

Ooh, available on Gamepass! I must say I'm finding it harder to justify downgrading it when my sub runs out (I have XBOX Live Ultimate which gives you PC Gamepass as well).

Would make a HOTAS system upgrade for Elite doubly worth it.

Need some techy help with this.
Son wants this on his laptop via his xbox game pass, it needs 150gb spare hard drive space but he’s only got 90ish gb spare on his smallish 250gb ssd. I know we should have got a laptop with a bigger drive in the first place, other than replacing the ssd what’s our options? Will an external drive run it ok?

Depends, if he has a full speed SATA or USB 3 port, probably. I run an external drive via USB 3 on my Xbox quite happily.

I'm less bothered now I've seen some of the autogen scenery - it really isn't doing anything more groundbreaking than Ortho with a nice set of autogen models.

I'm waiting to see if there is a demo to test the physics, the framerate on my machine and most importantly, the compatibility of all my cockpit components.

I'm also interested to see how the scenery loads over the net, as I've seen a couple of videos where you could see the scenery generating in the (not too) distance - almost reminiscent of Driver on PSone. While I have ~50Mbps to download with, my scenery currently sits on a Solid State drive which is going to be hard to match.

DCS is much more resource intensive than MS2020 is going to be, but you get to shoot missiles and bomb stuff. The base game is free and you get 1 map (Causasus region) and access to a P51 (trainer i.e. no guns) and SU25T low fidelity (no clicky cockpit switches).

I've been DCSing for a few years with a pretty big group, it's great/frustrating, massively time consuming and is pretty much all I play these days.

The developer has finally begun to sort their shit out as well, which means the updates tend to not break other aspects of the game.

I've looked as MS2020 and I'm just not interested in civil aviation.

Last time I played a PC flight sim was Looking Glass’s ‘Flight Unlimited II’! back in the 1990s. Remember using a Sidewinder joystick with it.

Was laid up in a wheelchair st the time and insomniac from pain - so the game was an epic distraction/hyperfocal aid that took me from one world into another. One of my bucketlist dreams back then was to travel and see SF Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. The dream almost - came to life with FU2 🙂 Most of all I remember the sound effects being a surprisingly comforting and realistic distraction. The control chatter was amazing for the time. The scenery was of it’s time so fairly unimportant compared to the flying. Frame rates were sometimes like watching a quick slideshow of stills!

I do remember wondering how flight sim games might develop in a few decades. Was given XPlane 9 some years later but my PC wasn’t up to it. Blessing in disguise!

Thankfully don’t have a PC anymore as I’d be diving into MS Flight 2020 like an otter at a waterpark and my real life would be over. The weather. The night scenery! It looks jawdroppingly good to me:

‘Man, 53, went into attic to ‘go flying’ and his body was undiscovered for 18 months. Microsoft declined to comment until the black box has been recovered’

If you subscribe to game pass on the PC, you get it

Think I pay something stupid like £3 per month for it

I'll believe it after the next couple of updates.

At this point the way I see it is:

If you like jets/bugs/clicky cockpits/a completely random model/pricing structure then DCS is what you want.

If you like WW2 (and WW1) stuff and having a logical thread to what you purchase and aren't fussed about clicky cockpits then IL2 is your badger.

If you like air quake and suffereing then War Thunder is your poison.

Civilian stuff will be MSFS2020, judging by the way some of the early access guys I fly IL2 with are getting hyped about it (within the limits of their NDA)

Word!

I do like Warthunder for the tanks though...

DCS Warbirds is just a mess.

IL2 just doesn't do it for me.

Warthunder tanks? You Masochist.

I ended up on IL2:GB precisely due to the complete mess of DCS warbirds, after the patch debacle, I was even more relieved about my choice. I just wish they'd let CloD die and do Britain/Africa/Malta/Italy in Great Battles...

Unfortunately Torbruk is an expansion to CloD, not IL2:GB, which annoys me.

Anyone know how would it be on an Xbox?

Meanwhile just watched this (specifically the segment between 23 min - 25 min) sunrise climb from Osaka to Tokyo, and I am honestly open-mouthed at what has been created here. Utterly stunning. (viewed in yt app @1080p60)
