Mrs M has just got a contract for a new job and to our surprise it states an eight hour working day (ie. one assumes 9 til 6 with an hour's lunch).
Is that normal for a "regular" (ie. non-shift, private sector, office work) job would people say? It's obviously (well, according to direct.gov) nothing unlawful but wondered whether they are squeezing a bit; thought that 7.5 hours (9 to 5:30) was more the thing?
7.5 is the norm these days for "official" hours. I don't know of that many people who do manage to do their stated hours though.
Oh yeah, quite agree that she'd be unlikely to leave bang on time every day but it's always good to know where you stand...
I'm on a 40 hour week. Nothing unusual there. I get more annual leave (29 days p/a, goes up to 31 next year) than most people in similar positions who would be on a more standard 37.5 hour week so balances out! It's up to me how I manage my hours. Sometimes I actually work 40 hours. But not often 🙂
There's the rub, the amount of annual leave being offered *is* below the supposed "legal" minimum so I guess she's feeling a bit squeezed as per the OP...

don't forget the stated legal minimum includes bank holidays, whereas most people get X days holiday *plus* bank hols
whereas most people get X days holiday *plus* bank hols
That's what this is, as far as we can tell... So isn't a stated "25 days" still lower than the minimum?
yes, according to this

Aye, that was my understanding...
Cheers all for help.
ahh - unless it's 25 days holiday - plus 8 bank holidays.
