I'm about to purchase a set of 4 General Grabber UHP's.

215/70 16 from Blackcircles.com for £320 fitted.

We won't be doing any serious off roading, but will see a lot of muddy fields and tracks etc. Also MrsFM drives the car daily and works out in the sticks, up in 'thills. She has a lot of grief from snow and icy conditions in the winter as the roads don't get treated up there.

I reckon these are a good compromise tyre without going the whole hog of the AT2's.

Any others I should consider first?

As always, Thanks in advance
🙂

BF Goodrich All Terrain. Mine were a lot more than you're about to pay (235/60/R16) but they are brilliant tyres and outlast everything else. Had 'em on my old 4x4, got 'em on the current 4x4.

BF Goodrich MT's, I used to have them on my old truck and they were fantastic!

yup, they're almost double the price and only available in A/T guise in my size.

Only going on a Nissan X-Trail, it's not big

The UHP is more road biased, the tread is quite sporty and not very deep in real life. I used Cooper Discoverer S/T on my Disco (bit more off road biased) and the other half used on her Freelander some Goodyear Wrangler ATR which had good road manners and were very capable off road.

The General Grabber AT2 though are very good also.

Check camskill.co.uk, I bought my tyres from there and they were a fair bit cheaper than Blackcircles unfitted price. They don't offer fitting but you could just check a couple of places for fitting only prices before ordering.

I got Toyo H09's which are M&S tyres, they were the most aggressive tyres I could find that had sufficient load and speed ratings for my 3.5t van.

Just looked at those Grabber UHP's and to be honest the H09's look much more like an all-terrain tyre than those do!

Been using Grabber A/T for years, love 'em. Especially in ice and snow. Bit noisy on surfaced roads but very good in bad conditions.

The wranglers look good, i'm liking the white writing on the sidewall.
Main reason for the UHP is the car will spend 90-95% of it's life on tarmac. But winter conditions are the most important really, along with motorway performance in the wet. I've been told by a few people that proper off road tyre can be bloody awfull in the wet at speed.
Looked at camskill, thanks for the link. They are pretty much the cheapest for online tyres. Was going with blackcircles purely for convenience.
What are the wranglers like on road generally and in the wet? They look like a more aggressive tread.

Car only does around 6000 miles a year too, so durability is not a big issue really

They were ok in the wet, didn't seem to cause my wife any trouble. Fastest she drove was 60-70 mph on a few journies and she didn't say there were any probs at all, they will be a bit nosier than "normal" tyres but all AT type tyres are.

A lot of the guys I deal with at work are loving the Coopers at the moment, but that's for proper off road work on army ranges ect.

BFG MT's on all the work Landys, except for ours with Michelin XZL because we have the 130

BFG AT would be better for more roadwork, in fact, had them on a navara at an old employer, fine until really tested off-road, but that was typical Jap pick-up problem
