Caught the 2nd half of Riot Women - looked fun. Like a grown up version of Fanny Batter* or whatever that punk grrrl comedy was last year.
[edit] *We Are Lady Parts.
New series of Alice in Borderland is out on Netflix
Excellent Japanese dark Sci fi squid games sort of thing
Earthsounds on Apple is great if you like a bit of nature. Beautiful photography, a different angle from the usual and a decent narrator in Tom Hiddleston.
Makes the dogs look at the telly a lot too 😊
Caught the 2nd half of Riot Women - looked fun.
Binged it and thought it was brilliant. Yes, it veered off course into melodrama now and then, but never mind. Uncomfortable viewing at times if you're male. I suspect there will be some nervous shifting in seats by men watching this with female partners.
Has anyone mentioned Legion on Disney?
by Noah Hawley of Alien Earth and Fargo
absolutely bonkers, but brilliant bonkers, Aubrey Plaza is massively underrated but steals every scene shes in

The Iris Affair is well worth a watch on Sky, just to marvel at how staggeringly bad it is.
They must have good fun making it, jetting around the world to exotic locations, but my god it’s absolutely awful. I’m now watching the second episode just to laugh at it. I don’t think they actually intended it to be a comedy though
Just binged series 3 of The Diplomat on Netflix. Obviously absurd* but fun geo-political yarn where Britain and the US are not actually best-of-friends....
From the finale, I'd guess there'll be a series 4 sometime....
* I'm sure there are lots of Trump-related nonsense happening now which puts to shame even the most outlandish plots that Hollywood can think of....
Has anyone mentioned Legion on Disney?
Will give it a try, not a superhero fan but looks interesting, ta
Finished the new Partridge the other day - overall pretty good I thought, very enjoyable with some brilliant moments.
The Iris Affair is well worth a watch on Sky
Yeah, I set Sky+ to record it. Got Episode 1 and watched that...quite forgettable... next one on the box was Episode 7! Er, where's the rest? Don't think I can be bothered to stream it, cos it was pretty stupid.
Talking of Netflix - realised I haven't watched anything on there for months, been paying their bill for sod all. As this thread doesn't mention anything on there that takes my fancy, I shall cancel it.
House of Dynamite out today.
A lot resting on this one - how is Kathryn Bigelow 73?
A really solid film-maker. There's a lot of ageing directors absolutely still going Scorcese / Spielberg .
It's a bloody committed job.
Also thanks to Binners et al for the black-rabbit rec - I thought it was ace. Love out of control dark fizz like this.
Shades of Ozark/Uncut Gems - right up my street.
Upgraded to 4K for H of D.
I've also got Dead of Winter to watch with Emma Thompson. Looks Fargo crazy. Oh and Frankenstein.
Autumn always the best for movies / series.
(Just swapped my current account to Barclays blue bullshit rewards and you get apple plus if you pay £5 for their account. Which is an easy win if you've got savings to offset that in their attached savings account.)
HoD a Netflix prog? Maybe I'll switch to the £5.99 with ads plan for it. Pointless keeping it otherwise
The Iris Affair is well worth a watch on Sky, just to marvel at how staggeringly bad it is.
It cannot be as bad as The Handyman currently "trending" (apparently) on Amazon Prime.
If that gets recommended to you by Amazon, throw the TV out of the window. It's appallingly bad.
There are apparently several films called The Handyman by the way, this one has the following "plot":
A washed-up handyman takes one last job at a secluded mansion, only to be thrust into a brutal showdown when a ruthless gang of home-invading thugs strikes.
Just so you know to avoid it!
Anyway, House of Dynamite is tonight's streaming choice.

Eight hour-long episodes, though - that's a big investment to do a bit of marvelling. We've watched three episodes. I do confess to a bit of a soft(*) spot for Niamh Algar; no idea why MrsJ is watching.
(* need to renew my prescription)
The Diplomat on Netflix.
We used to go to a restaurant near Notre Dame - nowhere fancy, just for a burger and chips. Then it was (very briefly) on The Diplomat and now the place is absolutely rammed and you can't get a seat. Not happy.

not a massive marvel fan but this was pretty good
The Surfer - saw it last night - bit of an odd but enjoyable film.
Anyway, House of Dynamite is tonight's streaming choice.
Not sure what to think of that. Very tense at times and horrifying how easily it could happen.
The film captured the general normality of life very well - people with families who do normal things and go to a job where they're tested and have to be on their A game...but it's never real.
Until it is.
A sequel would be fascinating but to say more kind of spoils the film itself.
Dupe post.
Agree crazy-legs.
Thought it was thoroughly tense but the ending was carried the weight of being perfect and a let-down at the same time. I sort of thought it might go that way.
Thought the first section was definitely the best. Watching stuff go from official procedure to apathy.
A lot hinged on the young chap feeding everyone info!
Gripping.
(For a very similar and equally tense set up it's worth watching episode 7 of paradise. )
Is it realistic they wouldn't know where the hell the ICBM was coming from?
There certainly is not much time.
House of Dynamite was excellent!
(And to think Trump is now in charge!)
HoD sounds like it's got some 'Fail Safe' energy going on.
'The Domestics' currently free on Prime is good, clean post apocalyptic fun.
Anyone who has not seen Task on now (HBO) needs to see it.
Not a duff episode. Truly brilliant writing (and casting) - from Brad Inglesby.
That's the one to beat this year.
Just watched H of D. Gripping stuff, as someone said, now Trump is in charge and isn't the Jared Harris character now played by Pete Hesgeth in real life!? Jesus Christ!
Anyway, coincidentally I read a book called Nuclear War: a scenario, about a month ago. It's a very similar narrative but also pads out some factual info about the protocols and scenarios that would play out. It's almost like the book this movie is based on. Worth a read if you find the film interesting, but it won't boost your confidence!
Yeah I've got the book too.
Christmas reading for sure.
Watched H of D last night. Nearly a good film, just lacking a bit of tension somewhat I thought. Not a great fan of Idris Elba. Certainly no Henry Fonda.
I read Nuclear War on holiday this year. Yes I am a miserable bugger. Thought it was excellent, and it certainly ratcheted the tension more than H of D.
Mayor of Kingstown season 4 today on paramount of Taylor Sheridan's most gritty entries.
Really bleak series with Jeremy Renner.
Basically the total collapse of an American City.
Great dialogue.

Just started on the Monster of Florence on Netflix. Quite a dark first episode and not the usual netflix fare (brains out crap with ridiculous assassins)
Can recommend Chad Powers on Disney+
Really good comedy/drama about an NFL player who gets cancelled, then tries to make a comeback in disguise.
Just very well done, with a super-strong cast.
Dark Winds on Netflix.
We're a year late to the party, but reposting anyway
New Colin Farrell film on Netflix from today I believe - "Ballad of a Small Player". I won't get a chance to watch til the weekend, but same director as "All Quiet on the Western Front" (2022 version) and "Conclave" so gotta be worth a viewing.
Is it anything like Eastbound and Down? I can recommend that.
Not seen that, is it on Netflix?
Not seen that, is it on Netflix?
It was an HBO show from about 15 years ago. Danny McBride plays an obnoxious washed up pro baseball player who ends up back in his hometown coaching high-school, desperate to get back to the big leagues.
Don't know if any one has mentioned 'The Asset'.
Finished it last night and thought it worked very well.
Waiting for some time to do..
Ballad of a Small Player and Frankenstein, and very much looking forward to 'Train Dreams' in Nov.
Based on a recommendation from a friend, I've started watching Trigger Point (ITVX). Season 3 has just been released but I decided to start on Season 1. It's quite good - very melodramatic though. About a police bomb disposal team in London.
An alternative working title might have been Bomby McBombface for the sheer number of explosions going on.
No recommendations for The Residence yet? We're six episodes in after a few days. It's properly fun. Sweary, but fun.
No recommendations for The Residence yet?
Think it was rated a few pages ago.
Thought it was excellent ,there needs to be more twitchers inside the white house to get photos of the shitehawk that's nesting there 😀
Things move so fast on streaming,I have a 'what to watch'list of my phone now, and a lot of recommendations have come from here,so I check this thread a lot.
Cause let's be honest, most of the Top 10 rated shows on the streaming sites are like playing Russian roulette. 😉 🤣

I had a couple of absolute stinkers on Amazon recommendations - their "trending" list should just be ignored!
Watched the first episode of Welcome To Derry
Nice nostalgic feel. Very high on the gore count straight from the off. Quite a clever twist/shock in the first episode that hopefully bodes well for the rest of the series.
Can recommend Chad Powers on Disney+
Really good comedy/drama about an NFL player who gets cancelled, then tries to make a comeback in disguise.
Just very well done, with a super-strong cast.
We watched the first 4 episodes (all that was available at the time) in one go last week. Very good.
Eastbound & Down *used* to be on Prime, don't know where it's got to now though
Watched “The Woman in Cabin 10” earlier, don’t bother with it………there’s probably a good film in there somewhere but not with this script/typeset cast.
Watched “The Woman in Cabin 10” earlier, don’t bother with it……
Yeah, sorry - I watched this a couple of weeks ago and I should have warned the forum not to bother with this shite 😄
Started 'Down Cemetary Road' on apple - Emma Thompson. I wasn't the biggest Slow Horses fan but mostly enjoyed it. (This is also Mick Herron). This has the same slightly clunky black humour but I'm enjoying some of the characters, and it got better through the episode.
Probably too early to say much but it's well shot and good art direction - definitely not a cheap production. Will stick with it as there's a load of intrigue hanging about and Tom Goodman-Hill's character is preposterously ridiculous as very entertaining if unconvincing.
(Plus GF loves it.)
Got to say Apple's 4K and bit rate for streaming is incredible in terms of quality. (Just in case anyone missed it you can get it packaged with barclays blue rewards account for effectively a fiver.)
Final episode of Brassic tonight and first 6 seasons on Netflix
https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2025/oct/29/brassic-season-7-sitcom-last-episode
Trigger Point is OK for a UK made series, if a little OTT. The Tagline should be "More Booms Than The Blitz!"
I did enjoy the bit where she called her boss a brown-nosing ****. I was certainly thinking it.
Watched “The Woman in Cabin 10” earlier, don’t bother with it
Yup, watched it last night. All I can presume is that there were a number of otherwise excellent actors who must have their pick of projects (Guy Pierce, Kiera Knightly, Art Malik, Hannah Waddingham, David Morrissey...) who had tax bills to pay, cos, by Christ, if Netflix didn't exist it would have been the kind of film where they used to sell the VHS/DVD by the tills in Tesco.
Watched No 24 on Netflix last night about Norwegian resistance. Thought it was very good.
We finished up S1 of Arctic Circle last night (Channel 4, Finland/ Russia border). It was too long as a series at 10 episodes; but episode 6-9 were great. Episode 10 tried to do far too much, but there are 3 more series to go, and it's all pretty engaging stuff.
^Interesting first episode, I'm in.
I've been considering taking out a subscription to Apple TV to get at stuff - and this clinches it.
Just started Trigger Point from S1 too. OK, v Jed Mercurio, and need some credibility suspense. Lots of same central casting faces from other Beeb or itv dramas and can't quite place them
Watched The Ridge last week on iPlayer, that was quite good fun
"Ballad of a Small Player"
Anyone checked it yet? Quite a strange film. Especially considering the director. Another fine performance from Farrell, but it's pretty weird. I think I enjoyed it more than House of Dynamite tbh, but they are definitely both "streaming films"... something not quite right compared to cinema bound films. (I know these both were on cinema too, but they were financed by the streamer services.)
Started Boots on Netflix last night (to get an idea what it's about, the book its based on is called "The Pink Marine"...) All seemed a bit too Full Metal Jacket to start with, but got quite into it once it got going. Will probably watch more.
Also Shantaram on Apple is pretty good. Charlie Hunnam can't do an Australian accent though. Otherwise it's decent.
We've been watching Isolated on Channel 4/WalterPresents. Spooky Finnish dram about folks trapped on an island by, spooky goings-on. It's good.
Also, for a bit of 'brain out Saturday evening throw a takeaway in your face and drink a bottle of wine' watching, I can recommend The Union. Action comedy thing with Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg. Stupid, obviously, but fun.
Started 'Down Cemetary Road' on apple - Emma Thompson. I wasn't the biggest Slow Horses fan but mostly enjoyed it.
I'm 50/50 on it, Emma Thomson's part is a bit over acted, maybe the story will explain itself but seems thrown together to start with (coincidence the posh guy was at dinner next to an exploding house that he has skin in the game with, then is at the hospital same time same place as Ruth Wilson....)
But I'm watching it for Ruth Wilson because she has *something* about her I like watching.
Only watched the first episode past night, but I think this could turn out to be a work of quiet genius:
Leonard and Hungry Paul - BBC iPlayer
Yea liking Down Cemetery Road - good actors, nice scenery and quirky characters.
@beinbahn
Thanks for flagging up No 24 on Netflix, I thought it was excellent.
Such an incredible story.
If you haven't already seen them,The 12th Man ( Netflix) and The Gold Run (BBC i-player) are also good.
Looking forward to Trespasses on C4 starting on Sunday. It’s based on one of the best books I’ve read in a while so I hope they do it justice.
Finally found Karen Pirie on the local TV here, it's good. Surprisingly short at 3 episodes though
but I think this could turn out to be a work of quiet genius:
Kind of. I want to like it, but that ‘comedy of awkwardness’ has been a bit overdone. These people who let themselves be interrupted, overridden, agreeing to things because they *should* etc… I’ve never met one in real life so the comedy trope is getting a bit too much.
Regarding the budget, Reeves has already messed the bed. If you cast your mind back to the last disastrously late spreadsheet experience she claimed at the time that particular budget was to fix the foundations and we would never experience another one quite so painful.
Well nothing was fixed and no one swallowed that pill at the time because of the clumsy way few of her ideas came together or even stayed the course.
Also, the amount of speculation on this one with leaks and will she/won't she over taxes shows total and utter lack of actual conviction over her choices. Many, many bad ideas floating around. Her interview with Marr was terrible - tempting everyone with taxe rises in her war speech and then refusing to comment on taxes rises.
Bizarre behaviour. This is core to current Labour's central problems. They simply don't know what they're doing because they are trying to run a government without having to shape society one way or another in response to the far Right's progress.
It really is an amateurish affair and doing nothing to stop our decline.
Omg what was I thinking with the above. Wrong topic.
Apologies.
Getting up too early these days.
Anyway Mayor of Kingstown s4 is fantastic two episodes in.
But you have to like grim, grim and grim. Blue, snowy Michigan has never looked so UK. (The decaying industrial feel is so North of England.)
Jeremy Renner is astonishing - to say he was crushed with a snow plow around 2 years ago, (and these would have been shot about a year ago) you wouldn't have a clue it's the same man.
Storylines are really intersecting now with new crime lord (Linen of Duty's Lennie James - from Nottingham!) and prison governor (Edie falco from Sopranos.)
Again, beautifully shot and delivered but you have to concentrate on the technical prison lingo - takes some following.
The town drug king-pin chief 'Bunny' is a well spoken Brit too. You absolutely would not guess.
Paramount 3 previous seasons to deal with.
Watched “The Woman in Cabin 10” earlier, don’t bother with it

I watched it last night, I'd stretch to a 4/10 at a push. Had the feeling of a Harlen Coben series that didn't have enough material to pad it out to 6 or 8 episodes so they cobbled it together into a 90-minute film.
Harlan Coben attempting a modern homage to Agatha Christie and failing miserably.
Omg what was I thinking with the above. Wrong topic.
Was funny.
I want to watch Pluribus but I don't got Apple TV so I can't.

We got through the first 2 series of it and found it quite gripping - not least for the various shots of Toronto, Kingston and Hamilton. Bunny is just excellent as protagonist and antagonist; Aiden Gillen's a bit limited mind, but I wanted to watch S3, but my Paramount+ subscription was up.
But it is griiiiim, and while I'm really bad at feminism, I really didn't like how it treated the female characters. The whole Iris storyline in S2 is deeply unpleasant, but also Renner's mum's character in S2 is painted as this weak woman who needs protecting from the world etc. I also figured out where S2 would end, in terms of main characters, by the end of S1, which was a little frustrating.
Del Toro's Frankenstein dropping on Netflix today, I believe.
Probably saving it for next weekend with GF.
Harlan Coben
I started reading his first book once, and there's an apology from him that it's a bit clunky and poorly written, I never finished it - it was garbage. From what I've seen he's horrendous at writing female characters and or even people with personality (thinking of the 1 episode of the Michael C Hall thing he wrote).
Anyway, when I see he's been involved in something I swerve at all costs.
While we are here, adverts for the Night Manager part 2 popped up last night, the first of these had me shouting at the TV about how poorly written the Elizabeth Debicki character was, I wonder if the second will have had any better writers involved.
Watched the first episode of Riot Women too, has plenty of promise.
I’ve only just discovered Mayor of Kingstown. I’m 3 episodes into the first series and it’s really really good. If I’ve another 3 series to go after this one, that’ll keep me happy.
It is indeed grim, but I’m finding it a lot like The Wire in a lot of ways. It’s compelling stuff

Appears you and I like grim!
It does have ring of The Wire to it.
Bunny is just excellent as protagonist and antagonist;
What a great observation.

Just a reminder to anyone who cares apple+ is 5 with a Barclays account if you jump through some hoops.
Paramount normally does a half price-ish deal around now and march. I've basically ended up paying about 40 a year for the 4k version (as I'm Taylor Sheridan fanboy but he's moving long term to NBC Universal as I understand it.)
He's an incredibly talented writer and director who occasionally disappears up his own cowboy arse.
Reminds me _ Landman season 2 next week I think. Very entertaining, less grim than MoK - but still has its Yellowstone vibes. (Still violent and depressing but very funny in a US conservative way.)
Lioness s3 not until next year I believe. Will miss Zoe Saldaña and her kick-ass A-team nutters.
If you've not seen them I would recommend Sheridan's films Wind River with Renner, and Hell or High Water, and of course not forgetting his writing work on Sicario.
There seems to be a lot of great stuff on Paramount. We got through Yellowstone pretty quick
Have you watched Tulsa King rone? It’s a bit daft but I’m really enjoying it. I’m not sure it’d work if it wasn’t for Sylvester Stallone hamming it up, but he’s excellent in it.
How could I forget that one Binners!
Yes I love it. Bit more on the 'fun' side of crime. Stallone has done a great job here - especially at his age.
Series 3 got off to a good start, slowed a bit and then picked up last week.
Very entertaining.
Sunday night special. 👍
Worth it for Slow Horses and Ted Lasso alone I reckon.
Also The Studio,
..and Silo. But not Lasso.
We're pretty out of good telly. Anything good French or Spanish I might have missed. Watching Disparue atm on Prime which seems pretty good, but could do with another Call My Agent
It's not strictly French @johnx2 - but have you watched etoile? Lots of French people and Parisian scenes as well as some NYC, but not cringey Americans. The Shermer-Palladino's write The Marvellous Mrs Maisel too (and obviously other stuff).
