The Witcher isn’t on the same level
all, it’s hilariously bad – to the point that I’m surprised Netflix even signed off on its final release.

I believe they have signed up another series. We’re watching it. It’s alright but nothing more.

I watched Ep 1. It is hilariously bad. I think I'll keep watching it just for laughs.

Saw the trailer for The Witcher, it looks terrible - unless you're particularly fond of video game cut scenes.

Has Godless had a mention? Gritty cowboy/girl mini-series.

...as is The Square, which won a Palme d'Or and tonks nicely along (dead easy this film critic lark).

I'm two episodes into The Witcher and enjoying it! Not sure why it's working for me. I didn't get as far with the GoTs series tbh, so...weird!

I think I like the fact that everyone seems to think that they're acting in an entirely different series lol

I'm enjoying The Witcher but it's not as good as I was hoping it would be. Maybe it will get into its stride towards the end... Or next series.

Watched a dance music doc called "What We Started" last night, bit of a mixed bag but some good vintage stuff and input from Carl Cox - who was the "star" along with Martin Garrix.

Worth a watch if you're interested or were there BITD, but overall a bit unfocused and superficial (apart from an emotional bit about Coxy).

I watched Ep 2 of The Witcher. It was even stupider than Ep 1. Not often we are blessed with something so hilariously dumb.

Watched about ten minutes of the first episode. It's mesmerically awful at just about every level you can think of. There is worse though. I somehow started watching a Korean (I think) series about a vampire who works as a military doctor, then becomes a top surgical resident. I thought it was very promising, but it mysteriously disappeared from our list, probably due to occult intervention.

More positively I'm quite liking Russian Doll in a Groundhog Day gone slightly darker way. And Bad Omens on Prime. Watched the first couple of episodes of The Spy and thought it was good, but kind of destined to be harrowing, which I wasn't really in the mood for.

Oh, and the US version of Shameless is ace.

The Movies That Made Us is a good fun series. Watched Home Alone and Ghostbusters (not Ghostbreakers!). Die Hard is next!

I lasted 20 mins. Whenever I saw Henry Cavill pouting with long hair and a sword on his shoulder I thought I was watching Zaphod Beeblebrox from the TV series of HHGTTG, and that it was the sword doing all the acting.

I often hear there is better content on the US Netflix. What are we missing here in the UK?

There used to be a fair bit more choice on the US netflix, but with more content creators pulling their programming off netflix, it isn't that much different anymore, there especially used to be a massive range of documentaries on the US version that we were not getting, now nowhere near as many. Which is a great shame, because browsing netflix brought my attention to some documentaries that I would never have seen otherwise, now I guess in future they will once again go undiscovered.

Netflix is doomed IMO, I hadn't subscribed for the last 6 months, just joined up again for Christmas, and have found nothing I want to watch, everything is just so sub standard, for the money they are supposed to be pumping into original content, they are really failing to deliver. With the debt they have, and more competition, they will be gone in 5 years.

Netflix is excellent IMO Im glad I continue to subscribe. I always find something I want to watch. Everything is of such a high standard. For the money they continue to pump money into original content. The Irishman wouldn't have made it into production had it not been for them. They are really continuing to deliver. Atypical, Ozark Better Call Saul, The Kominsky Method, The Barkley Marathons, Unsolved, Mindhunter, Manhunt.....
With the debt they have, and more competition, I hope they survive. 🙂

From a family friendly point of view I would recommend Klaus...an animated, slightly gothic Father Christmas origins story type thing.

There is a reason for that, it just isn't very good. It is like a long past it band getting back together for a money making last tour, but they can't sing the notes or keep the rhythm they once could, some might see it through nostalgic rose tinted spectacles, but for most it's just sad to see how far they have fallen from their heydays.

And the barkley marathon wasn't Netflix original content.

That's not the reason it wouldn't have got made - it's on record the studios wouldn't fund it. Not because they didn't believe it was going to be any good or not - they didn't want to sink that cash into it.

Sure I was disappointed with it - and this golden era of Netflix sinking tonnes of money into lots of risky ventures will not last forever but it's certainly not a bad thing for viewers.

I agree with your sentiment but it's certainly not the reason.

And the other numerous series?

Relax your sphincter, would you rather watch ITV?

Honestly, some folk are never happy.

I just finished Ep 3 of The Witcher. I was worried they'd run out of stupid, but it didn't disappoint, even more stupid than Ep 1 and 2. Piglet has a bad time at work, people won't accept her for who she is because she's horribly deformed, so she gets cosmetic surgery, transforms into a smoking hot babe, and shags the boss, while Superman has to deal with a literally walking abortion that he magically transforms into a smoking hot babe. He also shags another smoking hot babe.

It's about an hour too long, both the main Irish dudes are played by (in real life) Italians, which is a weird one, and clearly Scorsese hasn't any actors under 70 in his roladex, but it's not bad per se, it's just an Old Man's version of the same film he's been making for the last 40 years. It was still for all that, pretty watchable.

I think you've very accurately identified why I'm on ep 7 and still watching...

I made it to Ep 5 of The Witcher. Ep 3 seems to have been peak stupid, it's been a bit tame since then. Lots of plotting but a bit light on action. The princess talks to a tree, Gerald takes a bath, Piglet has a really rough day at work and feels sad because a baby dies. It turns out the princess's mum shagged a hedgehog, hence the magical powers. Gerald and Piglet make sweet love down by the fire. The bad guys are plotting bad deeds. I really hope Team Good Guys manage to get together and harness their magical powers to beat those baddies. The suspense is killing me.

Two films rounding off 2019 on the 'flix.

Marriage Story - brutally honest and dialogue heavy divorce story - actually. Gripping, dark and funny.

Adam Driver and Black Widow fight it out with expensive lawyers.

Fighting with my Family - enjoyable true story of a Norwich family's success with Wrestling. Very well put put together by Stephen Merchant. Lots of great Characters with some nice dimension to them.

Some great laughs and surprises along the way. Florence Pugh (from Midsommar) is completely believable.

Marriage Story - that'll win loads of awards. I know this because I found it extremely boring. Made it to about the half hour mark, I think.

Probably will.

It doesn't really go up a gear but once they get past the point of no return the dialogue does get very acerbic.

Adam Driver is in that post-911 film - just turned up on prime called "the report". That looks an interesting one. He's definitely the man of the moment.

You're in luck, the next ep is very much full on stupid! I've watched the lot, it's very rare for me to finish a series tbh. Surprising!
