Some of the houses on my close back onto 'waste' ground, essentially wild shrubs and trees that act as a noise barrier between the close and the main road.
Some houses that back onto this land have expanded their gardens to swallow up some of this land.
I'm pretty sure none of them have purchased the land off the council or applied for planning permission.
So what are your thoughts; there's no harm, good on them, or shop them to the council they've stollen the land?

I was just interested in opinions , to give it some context I'm not talking expanding by a couple of feet, in one instance they have doubled the size of their garden.
Build jumps through it.

Wait until they've built sheds etc in the new parts of their gardens then grass them up to the council

Sure its the council's? Where I live the spare bits belong to the company that originally built the houses. The're responsible for tree damage etc and have to pay for maintenance.
what if they have feral kids - does that affect things ?

If so I would expect the owners of the land they've annexed to show some interest in the situation.
You don't live in Crimea and the gardeners aren't Russian are they ?
I think that after 10 or 20 year can't remember which, that if you have fenced of land and been looking after it and no one has complained, it becomes your land legally. Well in Scotland anyway.
They will be watching you from the back garden by pretending to be "cultivating" the land. You will not have any privacy if you have them in the backyard. You cannot even be naked in your own garden anymore.
However, I do not think your idea of wild shrubs and trees noise barrier is really that effective tbh. As a noise barrier you need to build sound deflecting wall behind your house.
On the positive note at least you will have someone watching over your house as "security guards" ...
Also I will install a CCTV watching your garden just in case.

Pretty much everyone on our street has expanded their back gardens towards the old railway line behind the houses. Most have built garages / sheds too. Not sure where we all stand legally but not too worried - our garage is at least 10 years old.

The situation is very tricky to be frank especially if that is piece of land is considered "waste land". Why people take the liberty to do as they like I don't know. I mean this is a bureaucratic land surely the possibility of getting on others nerves can be very high.
Where I was long time ago they built a shanty town out of waste land ...

all land belongs to someone some where, if sonebody has taken it off them they suddenly get very possesive.
When we bought our house, I noticed the boundary fence didn't match the legal boundary in the deeds leaving a substantial- 5 x 5m triangular section outside the fence, that the council had been looking after since the development was built - circa 20 years. When I checked (bear in mind this is scotland) I was told that the law says it had reverted to common ground after 5 years of the council looking after it.
Scroll forward to when we got the extension added, and the builder was persuaded to get his plant on site via this fence, which was then rebuilt on the original deed lines, and 5 years of squeaky bum time waiting for someone to notice - 5 years on and it's now got my shoffice on it 🙂
I had a similar thing near me where gardens had been extended about 100 metres. Then a new school got built and my mate who was responsible for building the boundary fence put the pegs in for the boundary and was very lenient with his marking out.
however the households got upset at losing their free garden extensions and pulled up all his markers.
as a consequence he marked out to the letter of the contract and they lost every inch they had extended lol
i wouldnt give a crap about it, but if you lose it dont get too upset
