I dont follow sports, but this popped up on Facebook and wondered if it had been done yet

https://www.autosport.com/nascar-cup/news/hail-ross-but-should-nascar-ban-chastains-wild-last-corner-move-in-future/10393526/

https://twitter.com/TeamTrackhouse/status/1586880542267609089?s=20&t=D8uv3EDJAQji9zSVdTP4Xg

The guy appears to be mid pack, but needs to be higher up to continue in the series (?) so on the last half lap, where everyone else is slowing and turning in to the apex is that exciting nascar parade way, he plants his car on the outside barrier and floors it (and goes up a gear), slingshoting over the line in 4th. (and ruining his car)

How does Ross Chastain sit down with balls that big?

I suspect a rule change will be imminent!

he not only got 5 places, it also (just) enabled him to go into the playoff/post season race series which there was otherwise no hope of him getting into

Didn’t look particularly in control there.

Apparently first contact with the wall was at 130mph, then he just kept his foot in. Some of the team radio for it was on twitter, most of the other drivers just seemed impressed with the initiative/balls!

Incredibly stupid, but also genius. They should let him keep it this time and ban it from ever happening again.

Are there pics of the state of his car afterwards?

(and ruining his car)

I’ve watched a few NASCAR races over the years, and I’ve see cars absolutely demolished after less ‘adventurous’ moves than that one! I remember one car going back out after a pit-stop with what looked like an entire box of duct tape holding everything in front of the ‘screen together. His just had a few scrapes down the side, nothing for a NASCAR racer.

I did like him punting another car in the rear, nudging it out of his way; I’m sure there was a ‘conversation’ in the pits afterwards… 😁😎

Here's the onboard view.

A bit of a rub down the side won't do any serious harm. Those cars are built extremely strong, the panelwork is just clipped on over a steel spaceframe. Underneath, they look something like this.

Ballsy move, but massive potential benefit for a relatively small cost if it paid off... NASCAR cars are one of the cheapest high level motorsport vehicles to build, and even then, most of the money is in the engine. The bodywork might be made of carbon/kevlar, but he's probably done a few grand's worth of damage there for a pay off place wise that meant he qualified for the Championship 4 race off which he wouldn't have done otherwise...

Would have been quite a different move in an open wheeled formula, or without 1500kg of mostly spaceframed steel tube surrounding you no doubt...
