My daughters PC laptop seems to have a mind of its own, it changes the the name of Word and Powerpoint files.
when she puts the files on a "stick"to take the work to school, the last bit of the file name changes from, for example - homework.doc to homework.docx
It sticks an x on the end.. WTF? any ideas laptop running windows xp.
(I'm a Mac user and have no idea whats going on with PC files :-()

She needs to 'save as' 'Word 97-2003 Document'

good old office taking over again.. its a pain aint it !
Office 2007 can save in the old .doc version. use the save as option and select word 2003 version (without looking). will open fine then.

Yep .docx is the Office 2007 format.

I would suggest that what she is doing is probably opening a .doc file in Word 2007, then doing "Save As.." to save it to her memory stick, but leaving the "File Format" option as "Word 2007 Document (.docx)"

Either she should change that option to "Word 2003 (.doc)" or she should just copy the .doc files from "My Documents" to the memory stick without opening them in Word.

You can also alter the Options on Word 2007 so that it always saves in 2003 .doc format which will prevent this happening in the future.

You can download a patch so that old versions of Word can read .docx files. If it's the home computer that has Office 2003 then you should do that.
