I remember a time when anything over an hour old would drop off the front page.

That's 12 years old!

I'm on here a lot less. I think it's mainly because the replying is so difficult. I've always eventually got used to changes but this one is not good.

Agreed - pop up adverts, that pop up as you're trying to click on something and move everything around again, the time taken to render, everything now becoming stale as a result....and then finally on threads that used to be at least a decent debate being taken over by a few names that have ruined the experience.

It's usually open in the background but I don't read much now, it's just a frustrating experience and posting even more so - probably <5 posts a week now.

I don't get any of those issues but,

Where's the rest of this thread gone?  Is the import still in progress?

Back to the OPs question.

Putting your kids up for adoption can be a bit of a battle with Social Services and will bring some stigma in the neighbourhood but will stop it happening again.  Plus you’ll find you have more money for bike parts.

If you feel you need to keep the kids then it’s about seventy quid to get a cat put down then new kittens are usually locally available for free and much cuter.

I've noticed that all of the ten-year-old or more threads have been reduced to the opening post only, Cougar. Anyone having trouble with the forum could perhaps try the Brave browser before giving up on this place.

This was mentioned in the "New Forum" post, someone had also lost a very meaningful post about the death of their wife. I did try and track it down on WayBackMachine, it has a lot of archives of Singletrack World from over the years but the forum search function doesn't seem to work within the archives.

There's almost certainly a way to search within specific archives using WayBackMachine's own tools, but I couldn't work it out. However if you're looking for something specific that's missing and are more tech savvy than me, it's probably there.

Here you are. Losing that thread would be like having Kennedy's assassination removed from history

Pasting it as link doesn't work, the forum reformats it.

The OP on this page has the date, so it was just a matter of finding that date on archive.

//Type "singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/my-daughter-has-coated-cat-with-sudocrem-what-to-do" into the wayback machine website here - Mark ps. Fixing the format bug when a long url is added is on the list //

I just don’t understand the complaints about difficulty in replying, delays, etc;

Certainly during the early stages of the revamp over to the new format it was frustrating, but now it’s working really well, far better than it has for some significant amount of time. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Agreed Count, but greybeard's link appears to have broken the page width formatting. 😁

Not entirely the case, but problems do seem to plague the free members much more than paid up users. C'mon people, put your hands in your pocket, it's less than the cost of a pint of beer a month!

Why would anyone pay for something that doesn’t work though ?

STW does appear to be a generation thing, when we all start popping our clogs the forum will die too.

I don't need to pop my clogs. It will stop when I can't be arsed to fetch my glasses to deal with the suoerwidescreen vision formatting

It works fine if you pay! Well apart from this odd page width thing, but that's normal until someone tries something clever. 😁

Sorry about that - on my screen (PC, Firefox), the code window fits inside the page width and has a scroll bar.

It was the only way to post the link - the forum kept stripping off the archive.org part and then failing to find the site.

Any photos of the sudocream-ed cat? And any update on the outcome?

Whilst the formatting has failed and gone super wide, this page also opens and jumps to the video below the comments box.

Any page with the super wide format seems to do that for me. Normal formatting that fits my phone screen doesn't jump to the video at bottom of the page.

Regardless of how difficult the forum is to navigate I will always subscribe as the people on it know far more than google.

I'm loving all the replies saying everything is fine as I'm typing this in what looks like font size 0.5 as the display on my phone has opted for what I could only think to describe as 'Bayeux Tapestry Landscape' and this is the only way to see enough of what I am typing. Now I've got to scroll about a mile to the right for the reply button, which may or may not decide to work.

🤣🤣🤣

And obviously, this is the only forum and webpage that does anything like this on my phone.

To echo above, thisforum is dying if not dead yet. Most of my riding buddies used to be on here a lot. They simply don't bother now unless they want to start a topic asking for advice.

Jeez there's some right miserable folk on here today. If you don't like it, leave.

It's only this thread that has the weird layout. Did the sudocrem coated cat get into the server?

No photos, but I did hear that the Sudocrem cat had kittens, that the child left home, and there is no Sudocrem allowed in their student accommodation.

Blimey, yes. From 2012, I guess that means the daughter could well be going to university now or next year. Wonder if she took her emergency union jack. There seemed to be a few times when that would have been useful for my daughter while living in a shared house. 🤣

@Markie are you still knocking about?

Hey @oakwood if you subscribe a lot of the issues you rightly point out will vanish.

There's a bug that is part of the wpforo forum software that means it doesn't deal with overly long urls very well that leads to the page width on mobile being set to the width of the url. Wpforo support are aware of it but we'll likely put in our own fix before they do. In the meantime, if you add a link that doesn't automatically format itself into a thumbnail image fo the site you are linking to then you can use the add link button in the edit window menu to add links that won't break the page. For technical reasons (not ours) deep links to specific pages on waybackmachnine.org won't render out correctly as they are using a clever url format that embeds database queries into the url. In other words these links are not normal url links.

Sorry about this bug - it comes with the software but we'll get it fixed.

We will also look at why the thread hasn't imported correctly next week.

I like how Brenna, who joined about 8 days ago, has posted two replies that look quite AI generated. So here's what Copilot told me:

Oh dear, that sounds like quite the predicament! Sudocrem is notoriously thick and stubborn, especially on fur. Here’s what might help:

  1. Use a mild shampoo – A gentle pet shampoo (or even a small amount of dish soap) can help break down the cream. Try massaging it in and rinsing thoroughly.
  2. Cornstarch or flour – These can help absorb the excess cream, making it easier to brush out.
  3. Warm damp cloth – A warm, damp cloth can help soften the cream before attempting to remove it.
  4. Consult a vet – If the Sudocrem is deeply embedded or causing distress, a vet might have better solutions.

It might take a few rounds of cleaning, but patience is key! How’s your cat handling the situation? Hopefully, not plotting revenge. 😅

It's throwing up a 404 error. I wonder if @Greybeard or someone else cleverer than I can pull it out of WayBackMachine with a title rather than a date?

@Mark might have someone who can fish it out of the old database. It looks like the migration might have been incomplete.

It does look like that - if I look at the list of threads started by MrOvershoot, it's not there. But I have found it on archive.org, and rather than further destroy the formatting of this thread I've sent the link to him.

Edit: Rats! It's only archived the first page, sorry Mr O, hopefully Mark can find it.

I'm only getting the first page too (although it's showing links to 2 pages).

Fingers crossed it still exists in the old database & can be retrieved.

Agree. YouTube you have to pay for to remove the adverts but at least it still works for free users.

Good news! We found everything. My initial heart stopping moment was that we may have deleted everything from the old system when we 'thought' we'd successfully migrated everything. But its all there. It just needs slotting back into the database. Andy has already written the code to start that process. Bad news is it's a very resource hungry process so while he's running the import the site will slow. So Andy is doing it all gradually in batches and it will take mayb a week to get everything in place. There's already 2 years of missing replies back now. The stats at the bottom of the forum that display total posts is a way to track the progress. On Thursday that was 3.9 million. At time of posting it's 4.4 million. IN the chat forum I thik that takes us back around 9 years so far.

Is MrOvershoot's post there? This is a missing thread, not just missing replies. It doesn't seem to have made a reappearance yet.
