Bloomin' great.

I went to support a friend last night who has breast cancer, she held a sponsored headshave to raise money for BCC and shaved off her waist-length blonde dreadlocks.
Riding home about 10pm along the canal & i got jumped by a bunch of teenaged lads, around 5 or 6 of 'em.
Knocked me off my bike (the expensive one) & made me crash into a wall. Got a few kicks as i got to my feet & lashed out in reply.

Thought i was in danger of losing the bike if i got involved in a punch-up so i did one sharpish.
My altimeter/computer had gone & my ankle busted up.

Little shi-ites have cost me a day's wages as i'm currently laid up with an ankle the size of a small blue & black planet 🙁

Am I allowed a light chuckle at the altimeter/canal towpath combo? 😉

Glad you're not too badly hurt, though. Sounds like you might need a new late night route home.

I did actually think about taking the computer off the bike, but couldn't be bothered!
I did set off to work this morning & went back to the site of the attack - managed to find the computer/altimeter thingy so not all bad.
Bloody ankle went over when i got to work & i had to cadge a lift home.

Knew i should have taken the cheapo commuting bike & gone via the road....

I bet they hang about round there a lot or at least the surrounding area......go down with a group of mates and give them the proper kicking they so richly deserve.....even if you get the wrong bunch of lads the word will soon get round to leave mountain bikers alone

Of course maybe having victim written on your forehead didn't help 😉

Nasty business, hope your injuries heal quickly.

You did notify the police didn't you?

I was thinking along the same lines as Ken. Beat the daylight out of them, watch some Bronson's movies for inspiration. I see, to remember a little bundle of coins in a sock was useful for him.

No i didn't bother with the police.

I actually had 'GIRO' written on my head, wonder if the helmet did save me from owt?

I was really angry when i got home & i'd got to the point of getting the commuting bike out, one of my big medieval daggers & was out the door & halfway up the street before i realised how stupid i was being - so went back home to bed!

Reading a few muddydwarf posts (pushed him in the canal... jumped on his head...) I think I'll be avoiding Rochdale!

Sorry to hear that you're hurt, hope you mend well.

I would certainly inform the police.

However, I'm sorry to say it but is riding an expensive mtb with associated computers etc down an unlit(?) and unfrequented(?) canal towpath late at night really a very clever idea?? Particularly as this has happened before!

DezB - think i will too!

It's not worth calling the police. No damage to bike, no witnesses, no ID's of assailants, nothing stolen etc.
They haven't bothered to get back in touch with me after my 'road rage' assault & that had two independent witnesses.

It was a bunch of dickeheads thinking it was funny to assault someone riding past them.
Weird thing was, they had actually started to move out of my way & i had the words "thanks guys" on the tip of my tongue when they attacked.

It's the fact i've had to take a day off work that's pee'd me off.

At least i got the computer back!

Probably not HandsomeDog - i certainly won't be doing it again.

Done it literally hundreds of times before with no problems but there's always a first time...

I thought this thread was going to be about paying £7.65 for a bowl of chips. 🙂

Something similar happened to me last year on a well-known bit of cycle path in Bristol. It was pretty unpleasant at the time (and might have been more serious as one of them whacked me in the head with what appeared to be a bowling ball in a bag - luckily like you I was wearing a lid). I did go through a phase of avoiding the place where it happened, but it didn't last long, and I'm now using that route again, I just keep my eyes and ears open a bit more.

I wouldn't go down the vigilante route, I don't think anyone who seriously recommmends it has thought about the practicalities. You could end up getting hurt, you could also end up on the wrong side of the law. And as the guy above says, ffs report it to the police. First, the scummers are probably planning to do the same thing to someone else, and second how are the police meant to solve crimes that they don't know are happening?!

Yeah, gotta say go to the cops, that's what they're for. They may have a good idea who they are anyway.

Muddy - is this part of your now epic commute style stuff!

Bloody hell man, West Belfast is a doddle compared with Rochdale

Glad to hear you're in one piece

Also forgot to say, if you report it and if the problems with your ankle turn out to be more serious than a sprain, then you will be in a better position to get compensation for lost earnings.

You can & should insist they pursue it.

Yup - write a letter complaining about their lack if interest - IIRC they're obliged to reply - probably worth ccing someone further up the chain too (Chief Constable ? yer MP ?)

I'd certainly report it, it's another number on their crime stats. If people don't report stuff like that, they happily ignore it if it appears low level. Not to mention if there's other assaults in the same area they might be inclined to get off their arses and do something (tho' what, is another matter...)

I have a friend who was set upon by a group of children who had been failed by the state while he was walking home, in a pinstripe suit and carrying an umbrella and a briefcase. He reported them to the police for attempted robbery, but of course they had also reported him to the police for assault. The police had no way of establishing whether the middle aged lawyer or the teenage delinquent was telling the truth about who'd started it so they didn't do anything.

I quite sympathise with the idea that it's a total waste of energy telling the police, but you ought at least tell them so that they can give you a crime number. 🙂

Phone Police Non Emergency and report and ask for Incident No.

How can the police help if no one reports crime

Even if they do nothing, it is logged as crime.

Then the Government MIGHT give more funding as they think crime is going down.

I have done exactly this.

On the tandem coming down a cycle path a bunch of junior neds deliberately went to block us - we just peddled flat out at them screaming loudly - they suddenly realised that 30 stone all up of us and tandem would win over 9stone of neddette - and scattered looking scared.

Very funny

Thanks for clarifying, for a moment there I actually blamed the poor little devils.

More like "let-off by the state for previous crimes and have realised that crime does indeed pay"

Ahem.

When riding at night or in dodgy areas, why not hide a length of old bicycle chain in the handlebars? With something like a keyring on the end to pull it out quick.

I'm sure it could create quite an 'impression' if it was used appropriately.

On a commute I carry my D lock looped over the bars to use in defence.

I had a chat with a senior cop about this - he reckoned that unless I had an injury hitting someone with it would probably get me done for assault as hitting someone with a couple of kilos of steel would not be "reasonable force" Unless I was in severe danger / had already been wounded

However it is not an offensive weapon as it is something you would normally carry thus " a weapon of opportunity"

This, from people who get to carry an electric torture-gun that they can zap you with if you don't do as they say,and who's top tip for avoiding being robbed is to be obviously destitute. 🙄 😀

You mean like reasoning with them, or ensuring that they had access to better educational opportunities and strong role models? 🙂

I was thinking along the lines of a hearty shove or even a clip round the ear. Or you could make like your "respectable" mate, and stab them with a poisoned umbrella before making your getaway in a giant plastic swan.

That approach has proved to be ineffective, unless you're implying that even more money should be thrown at "reasoning with them" before we see a benefit ?!?!?!

Time for a new approach imo. Punishment. Real sentences. Stop defending these ****wits ffs

BD you're either trolling or you are delusional

This is what we do and it does not work. We lock up more of our people for less of a crime than any comparable society other than the USA

Seriously, report it to the police. I wonder how many female attempted-rape victims dont report assaults only to let it happen to other people instead of getting increased police presence.
