Can anyone recommend some free-to-download and simple software to enable me to burn mpeg4 files (Sufferfest videos if you must know) to DVD so I can play them on a standard DVD player?

I think that DVDVideoSoft might be your friend (also good for doing it the other way around and converting DVDs to watch on your iPod)
Or you could just get a Composite or Component AV cable and play your video files on the telly (assuming iPod / iPhone / iPad is available...)

Hope it works for you - very useful application. It will also download YouTube videos.
