A bit boring, but please read:
A few weeks ago I got a call from Vodafone asking whether I had tried to add a 2nd line to my account. I said no and was told someone had rang up claiming to be me & had tried to open a 2nd account.
I was told it was unsuccessful and when I enquired what else had been changed/done to my account I was told that nothing had been altered, as it was an unsuccessful attempt.
I then started receiving messages from Vodafone thanking me for signing up to Mobile Internet TV & getting text links to football matches etc. I rang them 3x about this & mentioned that someone had tried to access my account fraudulently. I was told it was a computer error & nothing to worry about; my contract hadn't changed...nor had any details....
Today, I was called by one of the Vodafone Welcome Team to see if I was happy with my new phone & package. I explained that I hadn't upgraded my phone or package - but was repeatedly told I had upgraded to a certain package & a certain phone. When i asked where the phone had been sent I was given an address (the address on my account), that wasn't my actual address. I then had another arguement about the fact that I didn't actually live there......then the penny dropped for this woman and I was told to ring customer services as my account had been fraudulently accessed.
So basically, someone has accessed my account by 'forgetting' my pin and just giving my name, address & DOB. They've then managed to renew my contract & upgrade to a new phone which they've then had sent to a new address that they have set-up on my account at the same time!!
So - I have now had a different PIN put on my account along with a 'secret' question & apparently it's emblazoned with messages that someone's tried to hack in.
I'd strongly recommend getting a 'secret' question set-up on your mobile account as anyone with your name, address & DOB can effectively access your account & do what they want to it - at least with Vodafone.
Oh, and I shred all my letters/statements etc. so it's not like I've been lax with my personal data.
