Hmm I would look at which version of Java you have installed. Sounds like the Java driver might not be compatible with your DB...

Stabbing in the dark though.

Serious answer: probably due to a network problem between the thing trying to access the database (the JDBC driver) and the database itself (SQL Server).

That or the database server has gone away completely.

Restart/reboot whatever you can and try again.
