If I was really worried I'd go to the doctors, just interested at this stage.

A month or so ago I chopped up a huge amount of wood. All by hand. As I was reaching the end of it My right hand started hurting, right in the middle of the palm leading more towards the wrist. I accepted this was probably a result of bruising to the palm after a few badly aimed shots made the shaft of the maul kick back against my hand.

6 weeks later and it's still hurting quite a lot. The point where I need to push open doors with the edge of my hand, I wince when I ride over potholes and the bars kick back and when a strong man shakes my hand it can hurt quite a lot which makes me look like a bit of a jessie.

Would we expect bruising to the palm to take a long time to get better or do you think it might be something a bit more serious?

That's your problem right there, should have used an axe 🙂

Definitely a spider bite.

Expect necrosis and a bizarre painful death by neurotoxins.

Doc here. 6 weeks is rather long for bruising. Off to a doc with you

It's a brown recluse spider isn't it?

God knows how it got over here, but it is.

Splendid help as usual chaps. The right answer popped up eventually. Now I just need to remember who my doctor is.

You've already got an axe, so why waste time at the doctor's?!

My A&E list looks something like this

1. Is some fluid coming out of me that won't stop coming out?
2. Am I blind?
3. Is a limb detached or pointing the wrong way?
4. Is something metal inside me?

If I can't answer yes to any of these questions then I'll wait a bit and see if it gets any worse, if not I'll eventually go and see a doctor.

I did ask if anyone else could see me but the only one available was when I'm away on holiday next week.

I'm in Cornwall so if it starts getting worse then I'll get a local chap to wave a dead chicken over it.

a few years ago fitting a door for a customer who was also a GP, he saw me hitting the chisel with palm of hand, instead of using a hammer or mallet, he pointed out the first patient he ever saw at orthopedics had broken a few small bones in hand by doing the same, i never hit a chisel with my hand again always use a hammer.
Get an x ray.

NOT BLOODY A&E it's a 6 weeks old injury for Christ sake.

I have faith in Samuri not to be so bloody stupid.

Look up carpal tunnel tests and see how you get on.

Surely you can amputate your own hand?

If not, have a read of 127 hours as a basic guide...

Another vote for tendonitis. Have you tried Ibuprofen for a few days?

I'm nails, thanks. 😉

I've taken a couple of days off the bike which has definitely helped. I'd go for tendonitis too. I'll take it easy over the next week. There's four of us in a caravan so spanking the monkey could be difficult anyway. I don't really do drugs. They're the devil's dangleberries. Plus half of them don't work on me, especially morphine based ones.

Far away from London. Surely a break would have created some swelling? I've had none (in my hand)

It's slowly getting better. I don't get the severe pains when I push things and shake hands with Northerners. The pills are fricking huge.

Hope it's all OK for my 200+ mile ride on Thursday.
