I stumbled across a couple of clips.
Both the original film with Elliot Gould and Donald Sutherland and the follow up series were staples of my childhood televising. Great characters, the blackest of comedy. Finding it hard to think of anything as enduring in the past 30 odd years.
perhaps somewhat controversially - Bluestone 42 is the nearest I can think of. This current series especially
One of the Freeview channels has been running the whole lot for ages now - lovely to dip back in and out. My lad has a great sense of humour and he enjoys them, but also appreciates the background to the war weariness of it.
The books are an excellent read as well. Not sure the Epileptic Hooker made it to the TV version!
Grew up with the series too. Hotlips, Frank, Radar, Klinger - you can see them in so many modern comedy productions. Needs to be re run.
I am still of the opinion that the MASH tv series is still the finest series ever made. No programme has ever created such amazing characters that you genuinely love and feel empathetic towards.
Even though major characters changed, the replacements quickly became loved characters.
I know some people criticise the Alan Alda era when he took on the directing duties as well, but I think it remained strong and vital right up until the end. The final episode still draws tears from me.
As you may have guessed: I'm a fan
PS: Not such a big fan of the film, perhaps somewhat controversially.
Just talking about the mash/bluestone war comedy link at work the the other day.
I loved the TV series when I was laal .
Not seen it for ages.....
The film is ok, but the series is superb. Not really adding much to the thread, just saying.
Mash used to be the best thing on telly, but I saw an old episode of Mash about a month back and had to switch off because the laughter track was doing my head in. Wondering if I picked the wrong episode or if the teenage version of me didn't register canned laugher in the same way.
The laughter track does transform it. The decision by BBC to not use it was great. Thank God for DVDs
I don't like the laughter track either but fortunately I barely even notice it. I guess living in the US as a child taught me to zone out such things.
The dubbed laughter wss never broadcast on the bbc. I never knew the US version had it until I saw a couple of YouTube clips. All the subtlty evaporates.
When I've bicycle toured in the US I've deen signs eith Photo Op on them. Just how blind are Americsns?
Through early morning fog I see....
Caught an episode while having a hotel room picnic (good beer and the salad bar in a bowl!) recently.
I laughed. I cried. In equal measure.
Brilliant TV.
Just about to start the boxset i bought myself for christmas.
Yep - the very very best - I've 1-6 seasons in a box set - all in cantonese. It travels well.
We have all of them on DVD - might be time to start again when we've finished Yes Prime Minister and Secret Army...
^^^
Specially if you jump off a really big bridge.
Sorry but that is a poor cover of an amazing song.
Prefer the film maybe I need to watch some episodes again, could have sworn it had canned laughter on BBC was an awful long time ago though.
Aye discovered it during my 6th form days when Paramount Comedy had a double bill every afternoon. Now have the complete box set with the film and series. Could easily sit down and watch a season at a time
