we live in a beautiful rural part of Devon reknowned for it's songbirds..
It's a new estate and as such has probably upset the wildlife balance to some degree what with the actual buildings and the huge influx of available food..(mostly provided by our next door neighbour with their enormous and elaborate feeding station..)

My problem is a lone resident Magpie that is capitalising on this by hanging around at the end of the gardens.. eating as many eggs and baby birds as it can stomach.. I imagine it's probably picking off all the overweight slow moving adult birds too after they have finished gorging themselves on the plentiful supply of nuts, seeds and leftovers..

It's as fat as a hen and has already seen off most of the migratory birds that have recently arrived.. I worry for our xmas Robin..

can I shoot it with a clear conscience..? I'm prepared to eat it..

Kill it, but only if you're prepared to kill the local sparrow-hawk too.
Otherwise it's a bit racist init.

Shoot it yes, but don't eat it. They are carrion eaters the same as crows and they are riddled.
You prob would be okay, but I wouldn't touch it.

Classed as vermin AFAIK - whack it

Not enough meat on them for much of a pie though

none of your business, what do you expect it to do?

find out where it lives and send a strongly worded letter

or teach it to play the banjo

Just a natural scavenger/predator going about its business. Cats do way more damage to songbird populations. Are you going to start shooting them too?

PS. Never had magpie, but rook's well tasty.

Knock it off with a head shot from an air rifle that's up to the job power wise and accuracy wise. Also, you must be able to place a pellet into a target the size of a 2p coin, at range and with "buck fever" affecting your breathing and heart rate. Practice, practice and practice. Even a magpie deserves a humane exit.

Oh - and don't eat it. Chuck it into the undergrowth for Charlie.

Kill these, bit harsh IMHO..

If it's on it's own it's a bit "sorrowful", find it a mate it'll be two for Joy, 3 for a Girlie and 4 for a Boy, 5 for silver, 6 for Gold, 7 for a secret never to be... told.

Ten for a bird you must not miss, I thought.

Though, I'd have been about five when Magpie was on, so who knows.

.177 to the scone and be prepared for a few others to gather round their dead mate, pick these off too, it can become a bit noisy though.

So if you ate it,

would it be mag-pie or magpie pie?

The biggest cause of declining songbird populations is probably humans (with cats second, in as much as they're separate)... I don't think it'd be right to kill the magpie.

The time for talking is over. Now call it extreme if you like, but I propose we hit it hard, and we hit it fast, with a major, and I mean major, leaflet campaign.

And if that doesn't work, blast it with a bazookeroid.

The other day I stopped counting at 50 magpies in the park near me.
Didn't know they were bad guys. They were rare when I were a lad but not as rare as foxes. How times change.
