Just a PSA ....... search suggests it hasn't been mentioned previously on here
I went to a local LMHR event last Saturday which had a particularly excellent local band - BAD SIGN (click on Inconceivable Truth)
There's a big event in Barnsley next Sat.
Love music hate racism
That is all.
Did it change anyone's mind on the subject of race? Genuine question, given the majority of the country aren't really racist, and the ones who are are likely to hold entrenched views on the subject?
Or was it just good music, which is fair enough if it was?
I went to the original Rock Against Racism in Victoria Park.
I don't remember much about it, because I was very small, and I was dressed as a little Native American.
But I have grown up as someone who sees that racism is a complete and utter crock of shit, so it must have worked.
all 'isms' are bad.........as are all 'ists'
Ooh, I dunno, Ton; Socialism's not all bad, nor are Socialists... 😀
FREE NAMIBIA NOW!
She appears to have bought the wrong sized top, silly girl...
Heh! Meatloaf is on the News, talking about volcanoes.
kennyp - it is generally accepted that the ANL had a devastating effect on the NF at a time when it was recruiting massively amongst young people. Rock Against Racism was it's most powerful weapon.
Racism divides people ........ music unites people. Therefore music is a powerful antidote to the poison which is racism. Love Music Hate Racism as RAR before them, has artists of different races preforming at their gigs - it sends a powerful message.
"was it just good music, which is fair enough if it was"
There is little doubt that many people go to these events primarily to hear the bands. The fact that they find themselves in a 'festive' environment of which the main purpose is to fight racism, helps to drive home the message. At the gig which I went to last Saturday, there were girls who were clearly there to see the band 'Bad Sign', for them to hear the lead singer describe the BNP as "scum" between numbers, can only have helped to drive home the message and fight the disease which is racism.
I do accept that the BNP have not made the inroad amongst young people which the NF once did. However I consider the BNP to be today, a greater menace. Racism does exist within our society, and it is an evil which should always be confronted. Uniting people around music is simply one more tactic in the fight against fascism.
Love music hate racism 🙂
Music=good.
Racism=bad.
I can't see this thread going the long haul TBH.
Fair enough. I was just curious as to whether these sort of things have much effect, or whether they are preaching to the converted. I've never been to one, so didn't know.
probably 60-40 preaching to the converted. But every new convert is a result
Does this mean I'll have to get rid of my "Victory to UNITA" t-shirt then?
probably 60-40 preaching to the converted. But every new convert is a result
That would suggest though that 40% of the folk who attended were racist surely?
I went to the original Rock Against Racism in Victoria Park
I was there, don't remember a small shock haired red indian* though.
*RAR irony disclaimer to follow
I was very small so you might not have seen me. I had a beaded outfit what my mum made.
That would suggest though that 40% of the folk who attended were racist surely?
or maybe the undecided or the uninformed.
There definitely were some racist elements at the original Rock Against Racism gigs & festivals, in particular those who thought that "White Riot" was a fascist song. They were soon disabused of that notion, if I remember correctly...
I get terribly confused by these sort of subjects. Do racist people actually attend concerts entitled 'Rock against racism'? I mean, clearly racist people are as thick as shite but you'd have to be galatically stupid to attend such a concert if you didn't like people who have different colour skin to you, seeing as there's likely to be a lot of them there.
Similarly, I get a bit worried about people who go to football matches and then racially abuse the players.
So lets get this straight, you paid money to go and watch people you don't like? Would you go and watch the four tops and then give them abuse for being black?
That would suggest though that 40% of the folk who attended were racist surely?or maybe the undecided or the uninformed.
Yep, racism is rarely a black or white issue, ie, as in "you are or you're not"
Plus events like these tend to encourage people who aren't racist, to do what they can to challenge racism when confronted by it. As I said previously - it drives home the message that racism is not acceptable.
Yes. carry on.
All of the bands I play with have a drummer. I still wouldn't let my sister marry one! 🙂
I oppose all forms of discriminiation, racists are people too you know!
Love NOT hate Ernie, tut tut
On a serious note, I hate liquorice. People who like liquorice generally read the Socialist Worker which is hardly a coincidence. I've been to these gatherings before, only to be handed free liquorice at the gates.
Love Music, Hate Pete Doherty
You don't know the difference between "racism" and "racist" enfht ? 😯
Yes you are quite right..........racists are people too
*rolls eyes*
If your eyes are rolling you may be overdosing on liquorice, best call 999.
Give the paramedics the empty wrapper so they know what you've taken, incase you shortly start gibbering complete nonsense 😯
The eye rolling is caused by overdosing on the cretinous bollox which you spurt out on here enfht
*rolls eyes*
Kevevs - MemberMusic=good.
Racism=bad.
I can't see this thread going the long haul TBH.
Yeah I would have thought the same too Kevevs.
Obviously we didn't consider that some morons like enfht might have an issue with "love music hate racism".
.
btw enfht, your picture is coming up as "Picture stolen from : CelebritySmackBlog.Com".....which rather fittingly, makes you look like a tw4t.
Oh deary me.
Didn't mean to get you so upset. Clearly too much liquorice over the years has stripped you of any rational thinking.
There are many liquorice support groups who can help you, but you have to WANT their help Ernie. 🙄
Do racists really know that they are tho ? How many times have you heard somebody say "well, I'm not racist, but them there (insert stereotype racial origin) they just don't mix with us do they ?".
Perhaps they should hold an "are you a racist ?" poll as people go in,then repeat it on the way out. Thats proper science that is.

Do racists really know that they are tho ?
Good point. It also boils down to what you deem to be racism. There's obvious stuff, but we've got a mate who gets the hump if he hears a joke involving race.
I was going to say something about ernie & engfhthyr but I can't be bothered.
get a room you two
enfht - MemberDidn't mean to get you so upset.
Yeah, the opinions of a halfwit are really important to me.......so you can imagine just how "upset" I am.
What you meant to do, was to make an 'amusing' negative comment on a thread which was designed to inform people of music events organised to challenge the growing threat from racism.
Understandably, anything which challenges fascism and racism probably doesn't sit very comfortably with your extreme right-wing views, therefore you felt compelled to make a comment.
Unfortunately for you, possibly because of a panicky need to respond, or maybe just sheer stupidity, you appear to have confused "hating racism" with "hating racists".
I simply pointed out to you your obvious error. But I can assure you that you making a prat of yourself by misreading something, really doesn't bother me.
Why you waste your time with this man?
For the smug satisfaction maybe ?
And I tend not to let it go on issues concerning hate........racism, homophobia, etc. Although I generally ignore most of his daft comments.
Good point. It also boils down to what you deem to be racism.
That's the thing that bothers me a bit too. Overt racism, such as the knuckle dragging thugs that follow some extreme right-wing groups are obvious morons, but I worry sometimes that well-meaning anti-racism can sometimes lead to intolerance of freedom of speech. For example, the branding as racist of anyone who says they want curbs on immigration, or anyone who suggests there might in fact be disticnt differences between races.
It's not just racism where this manifests itself. It's just that that's the most obvious area in the media today.
At the time of the first RaR,I was 12/13,the NF were organised enough to be handing out fliers to us kids outside the school gates. Some'at as cool as the counter offer made a big difference.
"There's a big event in Barnsley next Sat."
Then all back to mine for tea and eggy bread!
Why do some lefties assume they own the moral high ground and unleash abuse. You are filled with hate, your logic is flawed, too much liquorice.
i was at rar at victoria park, i even remember a small kid dressed as an indian with beads(talkemada :D) which is a miracle considering how absolutley w*****d i was, at the time with all the nf stuff going on it was great to go somewhere where all the peaple agreed on something and not worry about being jumped and batterd' which happend fairly regular in those days allthough being the only asian looking punk with a 8inch red and white mohican with leapard skin sides probably did'nt help, 8)
things are better now imo
i even remember a small kid dressed as an indian with beads
Yay! I'm famous! 😀 Pretty amazing you remember seeing me, as I was one tiny little child amongst thousands of people! I'm not sure why my mum made a little costume for me really. I'll have to ask her. Apparently loads of people were taking photos of me; I'd love to see those.
I don't think we stayed very long. I think it was all a bit much for me. We lived next to the park, so it was handy. It's nice to know I was there though. I'm proud of that, and my mum for taking me.

Originally conceived as a one-off concert with a message against racism, Rock Against Racism was founded in 1976 by Red Saunders, Roger Huddle and others. According to Huddle, "it remained just an idea until August 1976" when Eric Clapton made a drunken declaration of support for former Conservative minister Enoch Powell (known for his anti-immigration Rivers of Blood speech) at a concert in Birmingham.Clapton told the crowd that England had "become overcrowded" and that they should vote for Powell to stop Britain from becoming "a black colony." Clapton told the audience that Britain should "get the foreigners out, get the wogs out, get the coons out" and then repeatedly shouted the National Front slogan "Keep Britain White."
What a knob! 🙄
you stared a trend with some of the punkets, they loved the beady look
Understandably, anything which challenges fascism and racism probably doesn't sit very comfortably with your extreme right-wing views, therefore you felt compelled to make a comment.
but racism isn't just restricted to right-wing bigots, Robert Mugabe is supposed to be a Marxist, but he's a screaming racist, and I know an Asian girl who was disowned by her family because she chose to marry a white English guy.
Racism isn't the exclusive preserve of white skinhead nutters like the BNP/NF/Combat 88.
Racism isn't the exclusive preserve of white skinhead nutters like the BNP/NF/Combat 88.
I would have thought that was a self-evident fact. Many years back I paired up and worked for a while, with an older Caribbean guy (black obviously) he told me that all the black people he knew were racist against white people. Now that was probably an exaggeration, and what he meant by racist was not, as in despising white people and wishing them harm (although undoubtedly there are some like that) but more along the lines of not liking white people very much and not wanting to spend quality time with them.
Yes, there are of course black/asian/chinese/whatever racist too. Not really any great surprise there, considering the mistrust, fear, and lack of understanding, which exists between the various communities.
And that is precisely why organisations such as Rock Against Racism have been so important in breaking down the barriers which divide people. RAR by bringing together black and white through Punk and Reggae, helped to challenge people's prejudices and stereotyping - and that applied to black people as much as to white people.
I dare say that quite a few behind the Reggae bands and artists in RAR and it's organisational work, came from sections of the Caribbean Rastafarian community which had little or no dealings with white people on a day to day basis - apart from perhaps, getting stopped by the Old Bill. RAR gave them a new experience and helped to challenge any erroneous perceptions they might of had.
Racism is an evil which plays no constructive role in society, the more it is challenged and stamped out, the better it is for everyone. Love music hate racism 😉
