Can you recommend a good gadget to mount a phone on to the handlebars mainly so I can follow Google Maps directions while riding in town? Obviously the main criterion is that the phone not fall off!

Or alternatively, have you got tips on what to avoid ?

Thanks !!

Quad Lock - https://www.quadlockcase.co.uk/

Had one for my phone before I had a GPS - worked well.

If you don't mind sticking something to your phone / case you could just get an adapter that fits standard Garmin mounts like this. I use one with my cheap backup phone..

For town less demanding...?
The quadlock bar mount is secure on serious gnar and has seen many an OTB without breaking the phone. The case itself is pretty tough and the whole thing including mount rotates when you go OTB.

It's a bit expensive for what it really is but it does what it says on the tin.

Hmm. A lot of quadlock love, but I’d prefer not to have the phone in a permanent case ...

Another QuadLock vote here. I have become used to the case and have bought a ring to go on it so I can hold it more securely (useful if I am browsing/texting whilst out walking the dog.). It also doubles as a useful hook to hang the phone from if I am pottering in the garage and streaming music from my phone.

Spare burly case with a garmin mount stuck to it. then any garmin mount on the bike.

My phone is usually in a silicon case but swap it into this one to fit to the bike.

are any of these systems waterproof or do they rely on a waterproof phone?

Triban holder from decathlon.... Works for. Helps if you have a silicone case on your phone.

Quadlock isn't waterproof but its usuable in the rain... its a 2 piece case with a clear water resistant top that covers the holes. If you were to drop the phone in a deep river/pond etc. for long the water would creep in. In normal use it keeps water out (rain) but you can't really use the touch screen when its covered in water.

Quadlock is pretty good in rain if you fit the clear cover to the screen (I find touch screen still works - seems others may not).
I wouldn’t want to go swimming relying on it.

Pulls out pretty easily. I've had some leather cases I used but 2 have died over the last 4-5 years and I'm using the quadlock now.

Definitely Quadlock for me, has anyone else suggested it yet? ;-D

The waterproof poncho cover works well. Case is surprisingly slim and (IMO) doesn't feel chunky.

Case, mount and phone have all survived several significant impacts.....

So – Quadlock, yeah?

They are way over priced ...
Their advertising really annoyed me (until Mous started) thwy has a "Taking the world by storm"...(like the ones Mother from wherever you live earns 100k a year from home type)

but they are really really good...
This is the mount I like but DO NOT mount like the pics on a MTB... stick it on the bars and when you crash it rotates.

It’s the STW way.

Spare burly case with a garmin mount stuck to it. then any garmin mount on the bike.

Just Googled “Garmin mount male” and found various options for well under a tenner... And the out-front mounts can be found for a few quid (if you don’t insist on paying like £30 for a brand name to be printed on it..(why??)). So this is a very nice option I reckon.

Another vote for quadlock, they're not cheap but they work really well. My phone lives in the case and as well as the mtb mount I've also got the outfront road, wireless car & tripod mounts so dead easy to move between them.

I could piss about glueing garmin discs to the back of phone covers but then the phone won't sit flat and, quite frankly, I can't be arsed. Not when there's a perfectly good solution available for what is, in the grand scheme of things, not that much more money than buying a case, a spare case, some discs and some mounts.

Actually, I've got a topeak drybag as well, great on the bike and I'd happily submerge my phone in it. The mounting bracket is pretty solid and you can chuck a £10er, some coins and a debit card behind the phone and leave your wallet at home.

They're not exactly elegant though so def not something you'd use day-to-day.

just FYI Dr. J, I only put the quad lock case on when I'm going out on the bike. its not on permanently.

Quad lock here as well. I use an old phone  for my navigation purposes so having the Mount on my everyday phone is not an issue.

Because they work and protect your phone.
On at least 2 occasions I remember I have broken bones and the phone has been fine (to either drive home or call an ambulance)

Try a QuadLock and then try a cheaper alternative - you'll then appreciate why they are significantly more expensive yet lots of people are still recommending them.

Slightly surprised at all the QuadLock love - always thought it was overpriced, especially as it is not waterproof.

In the past I used a bar mount from "Ultimate Addons" which had the advantage that it was a full tough waterproof case that you just place the phone into (suited me as I don't usually bother with a phone case).

This seems to be the modern version of it:

They have a range of options with different mounts and cases:

Duh. Out front Garmin mounts protect your phone?

Was that sentence really so complicated?

I have the topeak dry bag option - it does the job but can be limiting if you need to access the side buttons. Also the plastic window isn't completely flat on the phone screen so tapping and moving maps can be a pain. But still does the job for what i need.

topeak dry bag

I don't know about complicated, just missing the point.
The quadlock system is engineered to protect the phone working as a system. Mount, case, rain cover.

The mount to case is very very secure and the mount to bars part is designed to rotate in the event of a big OTB whilst protecting the screen.

Those who have done it realise just how well that works together. The first couple of times I was pretty convinced the phone would be toast... get knocked off etc. but it doesn't.

just having another look through these, which ones are adjustable so you dont have to buy a different mount if you try/buy a different phone?

I was trying to find this one which I’d seen on Flipboard, but it seemed to have disappeared, but it’s just popped up again. As most top-end phones are waterproof enough to cope with reasonable immersion, all I’d use is what my iPhone 11 has, a gel-type case with a toughened glass screen protector - the case I have has a lanyard fitting point, so it would be easy to clip a lanyard to the bars so even if the phone gets knocked out of the mounting, it won’t go missing or hit the ground hard.

^^^ That one is one kickstarter
Quite amusing -

"all handlebars sizes (22.2mm to 31.8mm)
Made for every bike & every phone...
- we wouldn't recommend it for off-road or extreme riding"
😀

Rixen & Kaul Phonepad Quad Mini around £33 from your LBS

or the Phonepad Loop £28 from LBS.

@countzero - that's a funky little thing but totally unusable in the real world - it states not to use it for extreme riding but even riding a road bike on a mildly bumpy B road or over a speed hump would send that flying.

FWIW, I have a particularly nasty speedbump on my commute ride that regularly throws my bike lock out of it's holder (meaning I have to turn around to go back and collect it) and the QuadLock doesn't blink. That one would have undoubtedly sent my phone flying.

I found an alternative solution - I bought one for £8 off Amazon and used my work phone so I don't care that much if it falls off 🙂
