Morning all,

Long story short I find myself in Bradford Saturday afternoon (unavoidable) with a 2 year old in tow.

I need a pub that I can watch the footie at, as close to Thornton as possible that hopefully won't kick off too bad if we lose to Sweden.

I've never taken a 2 year old to a pub when there's footie on before.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Don't know about pubs in Bradford but are there any big outdoor screens showing it? Millennium square in Leeds has one, might be one in Bradford.

They aren't showing the matches in Centenary Square.

Is there another reason why you're going into Bradford? If your other event is at Thornton then I would be heading in the opposite direction - I know most of the villages such as Denholme are a bit on the lively side, but there must be somewhere a local could recommend which would be a bit more sedate around the Harden/Cullingworth area.

If you go to one out in the sticks you have to drive to, fewer people will be in there getting hammered from the early morn.

Anything at a guess, if you're very lucky they might sit still and quiet for 90 minutes overnight, whilst they're asleep.

It's a terrible idea, what you need to do is entertain a 2 year old for the afternoon not go to a pub which is about the least suitable place for a child of any age short of a bookies.

I dunno, bookies have fabulous brightly coloured flashing light slot machines you can park him in front of, and they're even quite cheap now.

I misread that as telling the OP to take the 2-year-old to the bookies instead. 🙂

Actually not a bad plan. Comfy stools, shaded, dark interior, coffee machine, regulars staring dead eyed at the fixed odds machines, the chance for a cheeky flutter...

Lol STW trolls appear again. I'm calling you out Rob... spotted your two troll accounts straight off, nice touch making one of them a paid up member.

In terms of logistics I'll have the wife and 2 other family members with me to pass her around and keep her happy.

Any actual suggestions of family friendly pubs out there?

You could try the Raggalds Inn just outside Queensbury. Its not too far from the top of Thornton Road towards Queensbury. They've got a website and the reviews seem good.

Are they bothered about watching the football? If viewing isn't the priority here iirc the causeway foot at ogden has a decent sized garden for the small person/not football bothered, though it's nowhere near what I'd call a properly child friendly garden with pub attached.

It is however right next to the reservoir for a wander ice cream from a van etc. no idea if they'll have football on though.

No tv so I imagine not going to help the op. It does have a decent sized garden though.

Last time I was in the Raggalds it was because a local "celebrity" had just been shot. Mind you it was the mid-nineties.......

That was probably the mid 80's scapegoat, when Kenny Carter shot himself and his Mrs 🙁

OP - I reckon the Black Horse is your best bet in Thornton itself, outside of Thornton then I don't think the Causeway has a TV (never seen one there).  Moorland might have one which is only a mile or so further on from the Causeway Foot.  Junction Inn on cockin lane might have a telly, been a while since I went in there.

I'd give the Black Horse a quick call 🙂

EDIT - no, you're right scapegoat, there was a shooting there in the mid nineties!

I cycle past this pub

Rock & Heifer Inn, Rock Ln, Thornton, Bradford BD13 3RH

On the outskirts of Thornton so you need to drive to get there so should be OK. I'm guessing the football will be on but you would have to check.

As for the clientel I wouldn't know but I'm sure others on here would. It's closer than the raggalds.

Edit 24 April 1995:
No, it was Mick Briggs, shot dead by two men, one with a pistol the other with a shotgun. They also shot a customer and the landlord, Dr Death as he was known in the professional wrestling world, though they survived. Two men were convicted based on the evidence that Dr Death recognised their voices.
