The current PM was pretty much appointed by establishment power brokers in the civil service, media and the city

Blimey there's been a few nutty conspiracy theories on this thread but this takes the prize.

There is a very obvious conspiracy against the current PM in the rightwing media cheered on by X/Musk, MAGA (non hard right parties in europe generally), and various RTF, tommy rob, FB etc groups. And a few twits from the supposed left joining in as we see...

There doesn't need to be a conspiracy.  Starmer and Reeves are useless and have no direction or strategy, which is the point.  The country is no better off having them running it than when Sunak was running it and people can see that and want something better.  Truss was dealt with quickly, Starmer will just hang on in there thinking he is doing a great job.

Yeah, I mentioned Starmer.

And don't forget also the overwhelming majority of the population........ they are all apparently part of this conspiracy which you speak off. Currently 73% of voters see him unfavourably!

https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/53439-political-favourability-ratings-november-2025

Plus let's not forget that "Labour Together", the organisation behind Starmer's bid to become leader, was revealed today to be conspiring to have him replaced......yes everyone's in on the anti-Starmer conspiracy!

Btw John you mentioned, quote, "there's been a few nutty conspiracy theories on this thread", I must have missed them, can you provide any vague clues about them?

Incidentally I agree that it is nonsense to claim that Starmer was appointed by establishment power brokers in the civil service, media and the city, it was the Labour Party members who he successfully fooled with his "Corbynism without Corbyn" bollox who appointed him.

Although to be fair the right-wing press were hugely satisfied when they realised that he was just full of shit, look at the easy ride they have given him compared to his predecessor.

I think its important to maintain a bit of perspective.

I don't think Starmers government is very impressive, but in the context of the Conservatives 'lazy Susan' approach of rotating ministers and PMs it's brilliant.

The bar wasn't very high, though, let's be honest.

I mean truss famously said we are now exporting tea to China, Yorkshire tea to be exact, lol.

Don't quote me but I think Yorkshire tea is mostly sourced from Africa and India.
And don't even get me started on pork markets and European cheese!!

Much as I am bitterly disappointed by Labours abysmal performance and pandering to the right, they have made some small improvements in some small areas. "Better off"? Probably not, more like "not quite as shit".

My point is that it should never have been left to a few thousand racist pensioners to decide who gets to be PM.

Please dont keep repeating this rubbish. Lets leave aside our entire political system and how difficult it would be to move away from a members vote and the obvious flaws of leaving it to the professionals to avoid triggering you lets just think the orange book lot and how their paymaster did move on and is now funding an even bigger bunch of loons.

She had plenty of support from the hard right press/institutions and not just the membership. There were plenty suspicious about Sunak and his slightly less right wing loony ideas.

There is a real risk by blaming the membership everyone else is let off like, for example, a certain Nigel Farage who praised her budget "the best Conservative budget since 1986" and, well, pretty much everyone on the rightwing, especially the press,  who absolutely loved it for the first couple of days.

Although in fairness no one had expected the pension funds to be such morons (okay thats a flaw but see below)and carrying out such insane overleveraging whilst ignoring the advice given to us amateurs of "prices may go down as well as up". Possibly something to bear in mind when deifying the bonds markets.

 "not quite as shit".

Well yes, I guess there's that at least,  not quite as shit as Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.

But the problem is that there is also another aspect of his premiership......he is holding the door of 10 Downing Street wide open for Nigel Farage.

An eyes-watering 172 seat parliamentary majority plus 5 full uninterrupted years to use it how he likes and make a real difference. Yet we are witnessing him pissing it all down the drain and making Nigel Farage's premiership all but certain. Although I very much doubt he even cares.

I think he cares, I genuinely do... But I think he's scared of the real elephant in the room when it comes to tax..
The multinationals who don't pay any.
I'm talking about alphabet, Amazon, meta etc. Etc.

That's why there's a black hole in public finance..
It's not because some families can afford a house with a garden and a garage, and some are stuck in a rental trap.. that's not even pocket change compared to the billions in lost tax income that should be coming from the global mega-coorps to be allowed to operate in the UK.

I think he is best summed up by the alleged critic who said "only PM who thinks his political beliefs should be private". He has displayed firm beliefs about a couple of subjects but thats about it.

I listened to the revolutions podcast a while back (its great and I recommend it but it is lengthy) and he does remind me of several of those who came "behind by a head", often literally, who couldn't quite decide on a position so just vacillated until everyone was annoyed and one of the most extreme by action(note not by ideology) took advantage.

Well exactly.. It's a balancing act.
If I was PM I'd outright make religion of any kind, illegal.. Or at least I'd remove any religious bias in any and all decisions.

That probably won't win any votes though, as the likes of farrage would say 'they are banning Christmas! Bloody Jews /mussies etc.

As far as I am concerned, religion has absolutely no place in modern society, fine if you want to be quirky and collect amythst stones for your Shakira or whatever, but please stop thinking your particular interpretation of religion has any relevance, because it's all utter bullshit.

Might be a mistake on my side but I didnt intend it to be read as such.

Its more at some point you have to shit or get off the pot. The main problem, in my eyes, with Starner is he wastes time trying to placate the hard right. This is an impossible mission since they look back to Thatcher who took a ton of state resources and pissed them away. This wouldnt be so bad in itself but the problem is she didnt just piss them away but sold them on the never-never which is now becoming due.

These arent people who can be appeased or reasoned with since they havent arrived at their positions through reasons. These are the sort of people who ignore the tories taking the north sea reserves and pissing them away whilst counting the drips as a kind donation.

As for your starter. As someone who thinks Dawkins is a bit of a wet I would never oppose people believing in some crap or another. That way you end up with the confused amplified backlash and people muttering about Cromwell or the Romans being religiously intolerant (neither of which is really true unless people mix up religion and politics).

I struggle to see how you would remove that bias as well.

I am also not quite sure why you are against religious belief in particular? Are you equally opposed to any other unfounded beliefs?

You are Mao Zedong and I claim my utilitarian two-piece grey suit.

I am not sure how the evils of religion got onto a thread about Liz Truss. Among the multitude of issues confronting the UK I don't think that religion figures very high, unless you have developed a fear of islam?

For me the biggest problem currently facing the UK is the rise of the far-right and Reform. I may be wrong but I doubt that many Reform voters go to church.

And "Stop The Boats" doesn't sound like a religious slogan to me, whether it is said by a Hindu like Rishi Sunak or an atheist like Sir Keir Starmer.

David Cameron tweeted something the other day about how it was 20 years since he'd been elected Tory leader, what an honour to lead the party etc.

He got absolutely taken to pieces in the replies.

Liz Truss is just (one of) the products of his total incompetence and stupidity. A conveyor belt of ever increasing stupidity.

Is Liz Truss now less a person and more an abstract performance art piece?

Fair play to her. Her total lack of self-awareness and desperate appeal to the Trump MAGA lot is absolutely hilarious. Poor old Lizzie. Even Russel Brand has managed to make it big with those morons. That must sting

On the issue of "total lack of self-awareness"......

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/budget-labour-starmer-reeves-liz-truss-yougov-poll-b2876348.html

Asked who they would trust with the economy, a YouGov poll showed 10 per cent of people said Labour – fewer than those who said they would trust Ms Truss, who presided over a shambolic tenure of the economy as prime minister.

That must bring Liz Truss a little bit of comfort and reduce the sting.

With what, politics? Yeah I guess. Not so much with Liz Truss who was PM for just 45 days three years ago though, unlike apparently some.

But I thought the above article might be of interest to those who believe that Liz Truss remains topical and feel it is still important to mock her and the damage she did to the Tories.

I don't think that The Independent are obsessed with Liz Truss btw, but they obviously believe that her shambolic premiership gives some sort of context to the situation today

But not yet on STW where her 3 year thread is still live! Contrast that with the Rishi Sunak thread, Sunak was PM for 20 months compared to Truss's 45 days and yet he seems to have been forgotten, certainly his thread is no longer live.

I think the obsession with Liz Truss is that in her short term as PM her economic policies dramatically turned voters away from the Tories.

So it is probably worth pointing out voters are now even more put off by the current PM's economic policies than they were with Truss's, as the Independent article points out.

I'm not complaining at all !! 🤣 Far from it!

I am pointing out the hypocrisy of centrists not wanting to say anything at all about the current UK Prime Minister but having so much to say about someone who was PM for 45 days 3 years ago!

Now that's what I call "irony"!

Personally as long as the centrists want to bang on about someone who was Prime Minister years ago in a desperate attempt to divert attention away from the clown who is currently PM then I am more than happy to remind them that SKS has made the Labour government as unpopular as Liz Truss made the Tory government 🤗

Let's dissect this... lots of people have lots to say about the current UK Prime Minister. But why would they come to a thread about a previous PM to do so? Makes no sense to a normal person. And they'd be much more involvement in the Keir!Starmer! thread if... well, it's obvious why few people bother engaging there. I can only assume you want to deter such chat. As for "centrists", they do moan about the current PM, many never voted Labour, others held their nose and voted Labour to keep the Tories out... but importantly... if you think everyone to the right of Sultana is a centrist and a hypocrite, and then keep banging on in that fashion, then actual discussion rather than loaded repetitive slanging matches are rarely going to happen.

If you don't think we should talk about Truss, why not stop posting in this thread? Stop keeping it live. Well, after you've done your obligatory "must have the last word" post that is.

I'm not sure that Liz Truss is demented. Soon after she was defenestrated I remember reading (probably in Private Eye) that her backers had made it quite clear that if she was going to continue to receive funding then they would not countenance her admitting that her neoliberal libertarian policies were an economic failure.

Essentially she's being paid a lot of money to continue humiliating herself so that they can keep the faithful low information voters on side.

“Former UK PM” has a lot of pulling power overseas, so there’s plenty of fees to collect telling a simple story that chimes well with the, er, concerns of a certain USA audience. A lot of her more ‘demented’ sounding utterances since leaving office have actually been smartly and perfectly pitched for that non-UK audience (with some hope on her/their part that the UK can be moved that way in the coming years as well, making her relevant again here… but I imagine that’s probably a secondary concern).

Blimey, I thought that I had made it very clear that I do want to talk about Truss!

Yes for 45 days three years ago she was a terrible prime minister who did terrible damage to the Tory from which they have yet to recover, let's never forget that!

I am simply pointing out that this should not be used as a distraction from the fact that today, right now, what Truss did to the Tories SKS is doing to Labour, only no opinion polls showed the Tories behind the Greens when Truss was PM!

And I am obviously not the only one who wants to make a comparison between Liz Truss and SKS, both prime ministers, both deeply unpopular with voters, The Independent newspaper obviously believes it is a fair comparison with their "Labour now less trusted on the economy than Liz Truss" headline.

Liz Truss's single greatest claim to fame is the damage she did to the Tories, which is why she only lasted 45 days, so let's all laugh and remember that. But let's also be aware that SKS's premiership appears to be damaging Labour even more.

History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.

And they'd be much more involvement in the Keir!Starmer! thread if... well, it's obvious why few people bother engaging there. I can only assume you want to deter such chat.

Oh how predictable! 😂

The reason that binners for example has so much to say about about the person who was prime minister three years ago but absolutely nothing at all to say about the current prime minister is because he doesn't bother to engage with Lefties. Do you write this sort of stuff with a straight face?

Absolutely it is. Binners for example wants the political discussions on stw  to focus on the laughable antics of someone who was prime minister for a few days 3 years ago rather than discuss current politics and the current prime minister who is frankly an embarrassment to him.

This isn't true. Truss isn't well-received by the US right. She flopped at CPAC twice. Anyone that continues to donate to her should be examined for traumatic brain injury in the past.

There's one thread on STW concerning Miss Truss that is easily ignored, and only pops back info 'focus' when she does something worth laughing about.

You, however manage to shoehorn your distain for Keir Starmer into every single bloody thread that's not about bike tyres.

I will continue to mention the person who holds the highest political office in the UK on political threads. I do appreciate that some people would much rather that I didn't**, after all he is both deeply unpopular with voters and frankly an embarrassment to his supporters.

But the comparison that The Independent newspaper made in their headline "Labour now less trusted on the economy than Liz Truss" is perfectly valid, especially if we are to focus on what a disaster she was and still is, which seems to be the main area of focus.

Obviously if you are a Labour Party you probably don't want to hear it but I am not a Labour Party nor is apparently about 80% of the electorate. My understanding is that claiming to own a MBT is all that is expected on STW, not to be uncritical of the Labour Party on political threads.

pretty sure baiting binners .....

That's quite something, yesterday nickc was claiming that binners was deliberately baiting me! I think that binners attempts to bait lefties on STW is the stuff of legends but well done for being concerned about his possibly bruised ego.

Edit : ** you could always choose not to read what I post, a simple and easy solution. That's what I tend to do rather than tell people to stop.

Nah mate, my interest in Sir Keir Starmer on political threads is for exactly the same reason as the media's interest in him. He makes more headlines than any other UK politician not because he is living rent free in any journalists head but because he is the UK Prime Minister, and right now.

There is nothing weird about the media's "obsession" with SKS. What is weird though is some people treating him as some sort of taboo subject when discussing UK politics.

And I am afraid you exaggerate your importance to the lefties that live rent free in your head binners, you just amuse me! And your above post is the perfect example, after creating a song and dance about me mentioning Starmer on the Liz Truss thread you then decide to go back to mentioning Starmer after I post something uniquely about Liz Truss, you completely ignore my link to what Liz Truss said to Fox News! 😅

So anything to say about Liz Truss, the free speech advocate, claiming that the UK is "importing jihadis", or do you want to just talk about me and Starmer?

The problem is not with left or right as they are more options than fact.

Intolerance however is so the real problem. Intolerant of people with a different view to yours, from a different country, different accent, different colour skin, different side of the town, different school the list goes on, we are all human and have different opinions accept that and play nicely.

It’s bloody tedious listening to people who state their opinion as if it is fact, ok some are backed by stats but they can be skewed to make a point….

I’m guessing that the silly mare is deliberately misconstruing what sharia law actually means, for the sake of stirring up the far-Right neo-fascists who she’s hoping will become her power base.

Otherwise she’s even more stupid and ignorant than I’d ever imagined.

Or maybe both.
