What’s causing the horrible fluttering sensation just below my chest?

Keep on getting this horrible fluttering sensation about 2 inches below my sternum, slightly to the right side of my solar plexus

It’s close enough to the middle that I was worried about heart rhythm (Although I suffer from ectopic beats and never felt them there). Also my pulse is fine and I have an app on my phone to track irregular pulses, and it’s not picking up anything remotely abnormal.

I have a bit of wind, but I doubt it’s that. Almost feels like a twitching muscle

Any thoughts?

Yeah if not palpitations my first thought was muscle twitching.

Are you fully hydrated?

I get them in my arm occasionally, never in my abs!

Was a bit worried about atrial fibrillation but I’m assuming that would be reflected in your pulse being all over the place.

Too much caffeine? I sometimes get anxious feelings after my tenth cup of coffee of the day. 😉

Yeah that gives me palpitations but I feel they feel different. This is very localized and as I say doesn’t affect my pulse

Sounds like the wrong place for cardiac symptoms, but I'm not a cardiologist

I get muscle twitches every so often and they can be anywhere, in any size of muscle. Ribs, groin, eyes, fingers, anywhere.

I have had this before and I am still alive. Based on that my guess is that it isn't fatal and probably muscle twitch as it feels like an exagerated version of that which I get in my eye now and again. (Disclaimer: Even though I have been forced to watch numerous medical dramas, I am not a medical proffessional)

For me, that's an anxiety symptom. Not even sure if it's got a physical part or if it just feels like it does.

They were talking about it on the Trainerroad podcast once. I think they said it was the valve above the stomach fluttering due to acid something or other. Was quite a relief as at the time I'd experienced it a bit. Caffeine was a real trigger for me.

@tpbiker, thought of you yesterday when I was in A&E so am reporting in. Had an utter nightmare 24hrs that started with the fluttering in the chest, you don't need to know the detail but the outcome was that it wasn't a problem with my heart. The heart was affected but it was healthy and no sign I would suddenly keel over and die. Underlying reason still to be determined and a 24hr ECG session needs to happen but the Dr at A&E thinks it is Anxiety/stress related and not helped by caffine and alcohol. I am 48hrs in now and feel pretty normal, no flutters since bedtime last night.

If you had any worries hopefully I have done the panicing for you 🙂

*Edit* My heart was skipping a beat during the episode which is why 111 sent me to A&E

I mentioned this to my wife, not sure who decided to use the term in a positive way, it is bloody terrifying
