MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
I've an old, very old dell PC that is bulky for what I need. it'l not run win 10 properly, but runs ubuntu OK, ish, with only a few browser restarts!
so it's needing replaced.
Used mostly for browsing, bit of light office stuff occasionally and would like the option of touchscreen tablet type so can be used with a keyboard or as just a tab.
I was impressed with the linx tablets I've seen previoulsy, and though they are available it looks like they're not being developed further?
Specifically looking at the 12V64 with the surface-a-like soft keyboard. though may go 10" if I can get something without a hardcase keybaord.
I can pick one of these up for about £130, is this the best bet, or should I be considering something else?
I've had a couple of Linx tablets and my son was given on through school. My advice? Avoid like the plague. All of them have stopped working, usually refusing to power on. They are cheap for a reason.
My brother has one of these, well I say one, he's on his third because the first two went wrong.
Performance-wise, I used it to browse the web for a bit and it seemed fine.
hmm, OK. any possible alternatives, that aren't massively over budget?
only others I can find taht may be OK are the win10/android dual boot, but I'm not 100% on those, mostly as they are android 5 at the most..
What about a second hand Yoga, e.g.
They have a touchscreen and can fold back on themselves to be used like a tablet.
I've had a Linx tablet running Windows 8 for about 2 years, and it's been fine.I'm looking at a Microsoft Surface Go (when it comes out in August) only because I'd like to run W10. It will be a bit expansive.
I've a Yoga 700 as my work laptop, was ideally looking for something a little less bulky, hence the tablet idea.
Had mine for about two years, no problems with it. It was cheap, sub £100. It is what it is though, cheap, slow, not a responsive touch screen, needs a mouse and keyboard to act as a way to use it anything remotely efficiently and its difficult to upgrade (small hard drive so can't upgrade to Win 10). Browsing without the keyboard and mouse isn't a nice experience. Simple things like copy and paste, just impossible and drives me mad. Battery life isn't great, but I'd hazard a guess its similar to other budget options. The slowness can be a pain as it feels like there is a fair bit of lag, for example, if I press the power button it should give me the prompt to swipe down to re-start, it doesn't so I press it again this time harder, still nothing, then I press it again, and it finally catches up and does the prompt 3 times.
Positives, my screen from a viewing perspective is actually fairly good. Nice clear and bright colours.
I'm now in the market for a new device as mine is in need of replacement, but I wouldn't bother with a Linx again, I'd rather pay more for something more reliable and intuitive. I'd also prefer the hard keyboard of a laptop, my Linx is fairly hefty, so I don't think much will be lost by having the shell screen of a laptop (chromebook in my case)
ok thanks.
looks like the Chuwi tablets are getting a look in....
yeah, i'm using a chuwi here. we have linx in the office but they're not heavily used ( 10" tablet only ) but no significant problems that would affect a home user.
the chuwi is ok, it doesn't play nice with it's PSU. i thought this was just the PSU and plugged it in to an anker one we have at the office and it was fine, however i found when using one of the other anker ones ( bought at the same time, should be identical ) it behaved the same as the original PSU, like it's current limiting or something. other than that it's been OK. good display. touchpad has a number of extra features over and above a basic one which TBH i find a pain, but it's nothing too much.
i don't bother using the android boot any more.
ta,
chuwi may be the choice then.
🙂
I have had a Linx 1010B for a couple of years. Win 10 and does the job. Only issues were the keyboard not connecting properly, but that was cured with a squirt of WD40 electrical contact cleaner (it's great at cleaning all sorts). It's getting dated, but it's fine for browsing, watching videos, and was cheap.
Er.. Thread hijack... . could someone with the Chuwi one (that's the dualboot W10/android one, right?) try running the Zwift android app? (or the W10 one)? Been looking for a tablet to run it but it needs a half decent GPU and it's hard to find the spec for those for tablets.
I'm on my 3rd 12v64, replaced underwarranty by exchange on the doorstep both times. One was a well documented power button issue the other was a poor connection to the screen which made it go white noise every now and then, requiring a reset. This took two goes for the warranty dept to respond nicely and I got a slightly newer model I think it might be the 12x64?
This replaced model got the same white noise issue, getting worse every day. I was about to complain again when a windows update came through overnight, and the issue never returned.
Now I use the tablet for at least an hr a day, its pretty good for browsing, movies etc. It has a metal body so feel good in the hand.
It does have an issue now in that the usb charge port has gone a bit baggy/loose, but this is probably down tot he kids who keep bloody messing with it when my back is turned. It still charges OK but only at a certain angle. I have the same problem with my Motorola and samsung phones so I am not going to blame linx for this.
Its apparently a lenovo product.
Would I buy another? Yes. The warranty replacement experience with Linx direct to them was excellent. I got it from ebuyer who were arseholes about it, but Linx turned out to be ace.
Old thread about it- has weird posts out of order disease but you can get the gist of it.

I'd go for one of the Acer or similar mini laptop/tablet options. More money than Linx but a reputable brand. A die-hard Mac fan I know got one for his gf and seemed complimentary about it, for the cost. PC world have lots of cheap options.
Given you use Ubuntu I'm guessing you aren't bound to Windows so may I be the first to suggest a Chromebook?
i'm not abut to install the zwift app but i can tell you that the chuwi doesn't run portal 2 effectively. it's laggy.
Given you use Ubuntu I’m guessing you aren’t bound to Windows so may I be the first to suggest a Chromebook?
Ubuntu not by choice. 😉
I like win 10 as I can do some light work related stuff easily without going all android weird laptop feeling.
that said, with a dual boot I can potentially run the tacx app..maybe.
Win 10 runs fine on my Vaio P series which is so slow it won't even run the JavaScript on Facebook page quickly.
win 10 doesn't do well on my old del vostro. should be fine, but I think the motherboard is on it's way out so things don't quite go as smoothly as they should.
Lubuntu runs OK, but if I open more than about 6 tabs in firefox then firefox crashes.
I've been using a Microsoft Surface 3 (not the pro) for uni all year - pretty similar use case to you: browsing and ms office
Been good. I got mine second hand for about £150
well, that's in budget definitely.
ended up with a recon linx 10v64 from argos outlet with 12 months warranty for just over £100. The surface 3's were going for >£150 and at least with the refurb I have warranty to lean on if I need to.
Bit of a bargain at that and so far it's been ideal for what I need. Took an age to update win 10, but runs smooth, only hiccuping when I have lots (10+) tabs open. Fine for me as I only tend to have a couple open.
Touchscreen is a bit clunky, but workable. Keyboard cover is actually quite nice to use, very positive feeling keys.
🙂
