MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Have a Dell laptop with XP and use AVG + Malware. Works great. T'other day the AVG resident shield suddenly (and for the first time) started flagging up 'dangerous' cookie / tracking problems - lots of 'yieldmanager' & 'revsci' amongst others. A Calgon radio ad plays frequently even when no programs running. Lots of clicking noises as I assume AVG is picking up more cookies?
Have
- run AVG full scan
- run Malware scan
- run CCleaner
- removed System Info Volume
- removed AVG and replaced with Avast and run full scan
Still getting lots of clicking noises but haven't got the resident sheild from AVG to tell me what it is! And can't now load AVG as part way thru, I get an error msg.
Any ideas of what to do?
Many thanks
I'm no computer expert but you might want to run Spybot to clear out any unwanted nasties on your PC. Then re-install AVG etc.
boot into safe mode and try again
Getting to be a theme, this, but start with MBAM from malwarebytes.org. Install, run, update, scan, post logs.
(a word on AVG - it used to be the best free option, but that was a couple of years and versions ago, there's better now)
Stop looking at porn on your PC
run Rkill then immediately do a malaware scan. Dont reboot until the scan is finished. Rkill shuts down the nasties so the scanner can find them
thanks all.
Ran Rkill (.com and .exe) and then Malaware - no infections found. Will run a scan in safe mode.
Is Avast recommended more so than AVG?
And problem seems to have diminished (maybe gone?) since deleting System Volume Info files (which I think gets rid of System Restore points) - would this make sense?
And FWIW, the nasties seemed to appear part way through downloading a film (Knight & Day, not a naughty one!) from Isohunt. Is P2P safe?
Is P2P safe?
You're having a laugh, right? I'm glad I didn't try to help now.
P2P is a very efficient way of getting viruses and other malware. Which is fine if you can manage the consequences.
What I'm recommending these days is Microsoft Security Essentials, backed up with Threatfire.
Just make sure you uninstall any previous AV completely, or you're in for a world of pain.
cougar - thanks
waderider - clearly I'm v novice and learnt a lesson 😕
