I need to get a laptop for a masters course in operational research.I need it for for general email etc but also to run SAS/Xpress Optimisation software.

Question is, in your experience, do I need a particularly good processor etc to run these sorts of stats/database packages? There are minimum requirements on the uni site but I don't want minimum if you see what I mean.

Looking at core 2 duo Macbook Pro but bit worried it might be under powered.

All advice gratefully received.

I have only had to use SAS on a PC a few times because the stats package was not available on our SAS server.

In my experience it is not the software itself that will slow the PC down it will be the size of the datasets you are trying to use.

I have used datasets with up to 10,000 observations and ran some statistical procedures locally on our work PCs (which are pretty low spec) and they worked okay.

Have you tried posting your query on any of the SAS forums or even calling SAS UK themselves to see what they say?
