Maybe not the prettiest in the world, but it does do what it says on the tin.

Is the new Defender going to cut the mustard?

Me no likey.
Thats the concept vehicle so proper design likely to be significantly different. Unless it ends up like the Evoque which was scarily similar to the concept.
Either way, I dont think they can afford to stray too far from the tried and tested, utilitarian recipe to be honest.
I also disagree about it perhaps not being the prettiest! I am biased though. 🙂

I'm a big landrover fan, but there are a lot of vehicles out there that do it better now IMHO.
That's to be expected though, as its a 30+ year design.
For example? And how much more expensive are they? And I'm quite sure the design has been updated in those 30+yrs.
I love them for the leg room and mpg.
Everyone raves about the Defender but practically no-one buys it.

I don't think they can afford to keep producing a model they can't sell in the US.
They're a design Icon with built in fixability in the field, can't do that with a lot of modern stuff. wouldn't think the Army would aprove of a new version making the old one obsolete and having to carry two lots of spares across Iraqistan/next county we invade cos' of oil.
konabunny. Fair point but I meant utilitarian in the fact that its pretty bare bones, and capable of carrying whatever/towing whatever. To sell it in the US I guess they have to improve safety aspects, both for pedestrians and passengers. I think this could be done whilst still keeping the utilitarian theme?
The British Army won't buy LRs anyway as they're too dangerous to the troops. I thought they'd ordered the new Italian LMV to replace them all?
oh no, does anyone else feel like an old and trusted friend has just been given a terminal diagnosis the results of which will lead to bloating, thin skin, a tacky feeling and eventual shame and self loathing. Poor old Land Rover, I'm just glad I knew you when you just made utilitarian motors that fell apart and didn't like going anywhere without a can of WD40 & tool No.1 in the glove box. I bet the new one has carpet and organic cheese washed half hide seats and a drivers vanity mirror.
Italian LMV's..
They're the ones with 1 forward gear and 4 reverse aren't they??
Safety was one of the factors for the redesigning.

Entering the emerging market of China was cited as the way forward, not too much sentimentality there, new markets will be looking at the current fashion for 4X4s.
Please tell me they're still going to make ones with grown-up wheels on too? Those little girly spinning toys they've put on there won't work for 99.9% of why I've had defenders in the past... Land Cruiser will finally win-out as the ultimate car in Africa...
Especially for you Helios, they'll be offering these as an option extra.
😀
This is a first attempt at redesigning this icon in the car world.
According to my sources the design will be refined over the next four years using owner/enthusiast groups etc... before the final car makes it into the showrooms.
"We plan to engage with existing and potential customers to help us finalise the details of the new vehicle" 8)
perhaps it'll finally have somewhere to put the drivers right arm? the current one is rubbish in that respect
Well I'm going to say that if that side profile is something like the end product, then I like it.
I'm sure there'll be a "Chelsea" version for That London and Nantwitch (spelling, well it is ooop north, do forgive)...
Will it still have spot weld alloy panels on it?
And a gearbox that has trouble finding third?
And a stearing box only fit for Donkey Kong?
I'd rather have any of the other vehicles here than a Defender.
From my limited experience in Sthn Africa, although there were a few Land Rovers, the newer stuff was pretty much all Japanese. Outback Australia is 90%+ Japanese.

Will the new model be out before the last oil reserves are tapped?
And I'm quite sure the design has been updated in those 30+yrs.
There have been different engines and gearbox combos, but the basic coil sprung (the main difference between the 110 later to be Defender and the Series 3s) rail chassis is the same.
Its an iconic design and not changed at all in 30 years.
For example? And how much more expensive are they?
Have you ever done any serious miles in one? They were designed for 5 foot 3, 9 stone 1 armed farmers.
Toyota have made a much better fist of it outside the UK.
And here's mine 🙂 Gone but not forgotten 🙁
(and yes for the pedants, I know it's not actually a defender)

BB you've obviously never been to Nantwich!
bazookajoe: You've just made me throw up a little bit...
Defender was better in Africa because if* it broke you could fix it... If** your Land Cruiser broke - you couldn't fix it...
*sorry for "if" read "when"
** for "if" read "in the unlikely event that"
