MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
i was thinking of buying a land rover defender for green laneing But was shocked to find out that the Defender comes under a commercial vehicle and next year falls under the governments omissions laws as i am in London I am told from 07 onwards is ok
The Discovery and the Range Rover may not be included in this
So if your a land rover defender owner and you drive or live in London do check your vehicle is ok
looks like a certain type, not all.

apparently not they still say all as its omissions they fail on
Really? What've they left out?
This may also have implications on speed limits, remember the NSL on a single carriageway road drops from 60mph to 50mph and dual carriageway from 70mph to 60mph.
People have been pulled over in pickups for driving at 60/70 by particularly picky police officers in the past!
Well done, Spoon! I just thought it - you said it! 😆
Can Defenders go over 60?

I have to keep reminding myself of this when in our camper conversion T4.
I can* get 80ish out of my TD5 easily, which is plenty for something weighing 2.5 tons
*well... could - its currently having its cylinder head checked. 🙁
Dos it matter what the vehicle is registered as, my bongo is registered as a PLG, MPV,not a camper, so are the speed limits the same as a car not a van/pickup?
Khani - its to do with the potential load capacity of the vehicle, not how it's registered or whether it carries people or not.
FYI

I'm ok
Transport for London use the DVLA database for compliance checks. When I checked with TfL a while back, they informed me that:
"All Mazda Bongos and Ford Fredas are exempt from the charge. However you may need to contact DVLA to get the details changed on your V5 document.
If your vehicle is categorised as a “Car” on the V5, then no charge is payable.
If your vehicle is categorised as a “Motor Caravan” on the V5, then no charge is payable as long as the Gross Vehicle Weight is shown in Section 4.
You can check your reg here

And after further stringvestigation, Allegedly bongos are not van derived but were designed as an mpv so speed limits are normal
Happy days
Is my 58 plate Berlingo (van) constrained by these lower limits then?

Depends on the model. Specifially a 2WD pickup is restricted to commercial vehicle speed limits, but the same pickup with 4WD is not.
y7ou have to be awkward dont you DD? 🙂
We're in a grey area here because if a van is "car-derived" and has a MAM not more than 2 tonnes, it "enjoys" the higher limits. In the case of the Berlingo, you say it meets the weight limit so whether the higher speed limits apply depends on whether the Berlingo is "car-derived".Unfortunately, the Citroen Berlingo was produce first as a van and the Berlingo Multispace is an adaptation of that van. So, the Citroen Berlingo van isn't car-derived; rather, the Berlingo Multispace is a van-derived car!
That said, the above is just my understanding and I can't pin down a definition of "car-derived" - so I suspect that it will be up to a court to decide should someone be brave enough to push the point right up the legal system.

😆
So, in essence, there's no definitive answer then. And given the nature of the problem, it would have to be a copper that would pull me over, as the fixed cameras don't pick up my reg and calculate the limits before deciding whether to flash me or not.
I've been driving it for over two years assuming it's car limits 😯
It's pretty gutless anyway - no fun to be had from driving it at speed. Although, it gets to 60 on a single carriageway quickly enough. Think I'll just curb my enthusiasm on SC/DCs from now on then.
I have a SpeedChioce course coming up in March anyway so I'll ask the instructors then 😳
What ?
