It's nicer than Preston.......just

Not sure there's a day out in it TBH, perhaps if you combined it with a jaunt on the prom at Morecambe and Happy Mount Park (at the North end).

There is a little train that runs on the prom and a couple of little parks, plus a semi permanent fair in what used to be an open air swimming pool / complex - the kids will love it.

The cafe at the end of the pier is OK too.

Nice place - lived there in the early 90s. Should work allow, I would return.

Not sure It's worth a day out though. Having said that Williamson Memorial and Park are nice. I think there's a butterfly house up that way too.

You could continue to Morecambe. Despite what its detractors (who'll be along as soon as I've posted this) say, the promenade is quite a nice place for a stroll if the weathers reasonable. Lots of little parks for the kids to play in plus interesting things to see. There's a cafe at one end called Breeze (I think) that's very good too. Just don't look in-land - keep your gaze focussed out to sea!

Edit: Beaten to it! 😀

+1 for Morecambe promenade. The renovation work is awesome. The rest of the town in a bit run down though. Shame really.

geoffj - cafe at the end of the pier? What pier?

Or carry on northwards to Silverdale and Arnside, which are really nice. Silverdale has nice family walks and the Wolf House cafe and Arnside is a tiny Victorian resort with a couple of decent cafes and no chavs. All within a few miles of the M6.

IIRC there is or was a vintage transport museum there? Subject of a BBC4 docu. I went one day but it was closed 🙁

There is a stone pier opposite the Midland Hotel

Soz Freddy you are right.

There is a Landmark Trust property in Lancaster though, I think.

Geoffj, I know the place you are thinking of. Not bad, but if in the area, I would walk west for 10 minutes to this place:

Really very good.

Really very good.

I know where you mean, but I wasn't that impressed TBH - handy for the kids playground though.

I live in Lancaster, I wouldn't say it has major attractions (like blackpool, york etc) but has a few places to visit. The castle tour is good if you like history, or maritime museum on the quay. Williamson park is good on a warm day. +1 for Morecambe in the sun- beach, cafes, views over the bay to the lakes can be stunning. Depends what you are into (no offroad bike routes nearby, lots of cyclepaths though).

Fair enough. My Mother-in-law lives in Heysham and we head down to the prom so the kids can have a run around and we can have lunch/a brew. Breeze is our cafe of choice.

Another option (if you're feeling flush) is lunch / afternoon tea at the Midland Hotel. Food is pretty good and the setting is lovely.

Now you're talking 😀

Although I was surprised at how small it actually is.

It's nice isn't it?

I was there last Tuesday for dinner with MrsG (her birthday). I was very pleasantly surprised. If I was being picky, there were a few little things I could pick them up on, but they were details. The whole experience was very good.

No Chavs!? One of my best friends is from Arnside and he was quite chavvy when he started uni, some of his friends from home were very chavvy, we were there one day and his mate came round in his chavved up polo and asked us if we wanted to go firing fireworks down drain pipes!!

It has got a really good fish and chip shop which more than makes up for it!

I would walk into Lancaster via the canal towpath. Park say near the hospice on the A6 north of town & walk via the aquaduct into town.
The coffee shop in the square below the landmark trust house is good, I don't know the name but they also own a coffee wholesale business so the coffee is good, cakes ok.
Morecambe is dire, it really is.
My fave cafe of all time is at Silk Mill, Galgate, open mornings. Top fry up.
