So, t'Boss is dropping some extremely unsubtle hints that she wants a Kitchenaid Classic mixer for her birthday.

They're far from cheap but I don't mind paying if it'll last 15+ years.

However, t'interweb reports suggest that since Whirlpool bought the design the quality has dropped off considerably; cheap motors & gears etc. Its main use will be doughs so I figure that'll strain the motor.

Any experiences?

Mrs iolo has one. She loves it. It's about 3 years old and gets used at least twice a week. It's still working so far.

Wife has had hers for a couple of years and no issues, gets used a lot. Weighs an absolute tonne, feels like it would survive a nuclear apocalypse.

Ok- sounding positive

Are they too heavy to move easily? We'd have to move it to use it

Not excessively heavy but it's a lump of metal so it's never going to be light.
Ours is kept on the worktop constantly as we like it's retro look.

They do look lovely but I'm thinking I will have to steal one rather than pay full price. The Artisan ones seem nice quality but not the cheapest.

We have had ours 15+ years iirc. It was half price at Lewis's as it had a scratch on. Works well, I replaced bushes in 2mins per side, and main gears cost not a lot and an hour to change.
It works, they are designed to be repaired and you can get parts. Fantastic. But not worth silly money..

don't bother it's a cult. Unless you want to tell everyone who cooks you something that you could have made that in a thermomix in 15 mins...
This was actually made in a thermomix

We have the Breville version, long warranty and worth it. The planetary mixing thing is very good everything from bread dough to cakes to a lot more.

Come down to Exmoor and I'll give you a demo in our restaurant!

...large purple silk triangle, jumpsuit and shaving of head not compulsory but strongly urged. 😀

I've had the demo, just not what I call cooking.

We got a Kenwood Chef instead, after much research. It might not have the cute old-fashioned looks of the KitchenAid, but as a machine to have in the kitchen, it's awesome.

Ours gets used every other day for bread making duties, it struggles a bit so I don't think they are as strong as they appear to be. You can get all the parts cheap and there are plenty of how-to-fix videos on YouTube. I've replaced the gears, circuit board and switches in ours over the last 15 years, so you can keep them running.

Thanks all. I like the self-repairable aspect.

After much research I think the Kenwood Chef is possibly slightly better all round but she wants a Kitchenaid so it's not worth the risk!

The Classic has a lower power motor than the fancier ones but reviews suggest they're ok so long as slower speeds are used for the really viscous stuff.

Right, decision made 🙂

We have a kenwood chef, they are good for domestic/small commercial stuff.

The "cult of the thermomix" thing is a tad OTT in my opinion, just discovered that you can use it as sous vide water bath which is pretty handy too.
