It’s a DJI Neo, isn’t it?

Longer version - 8 year old son has asked for a drone for Christmas. I’m not totally against the idea even if I do expect it’ll be rarely used (or frequently broken). The beginners drone market seems to be any absolute minefield though, with the vast majority seeming a bit crap once you look into it e.g. the decent looking Holy Stone offerings, that might just destroy themselves with little to no warning.

DJI then come in with the Neo for ~£160, but no controller included at that price. Happy to either load the controller app onto my phone or find an old one for him to use. Is the Neo really the only answer, or are there others that don’t fall into the “buy cheap, buy twice” category?

there is the tello but its not been updated for years. I've got one in a box somewhere.

neo looks pretty foolproof and internet says there is a neo2 out soon which will likely mean some deals on neo's.

The Neo dropped to almost £100 at some points last year (black friday??), so might be worth waiting to see if it drops again.

I got a pretty much unused Neo on eBay for £170 earlier this year, with the controller that your phone clips into and 2 extra batteries. Definitely worth it, surprisingly good picture quality and the kids have endless fun zooming it about. But you need to take it seriously if there's a camera involved. I've had to register for an "operator id" and the kids have had to register for a "flyer id", all of which require tests.

The new neo 2 is due within the month.

Wait till it's out and neo one will be cheaper.

Neo 2 might even be worth it depending on upgrades.

What does the youngster want to do with it?

I still tease my grown children about when they pestered us for ages about RC offroad buggies.

They were a novelty that almost made it to the New Year before being abandoned. 😉 😊

It's for an 8 year old.  They'll loose it quickly or get bored with it.  My son has a Q10 off Amazon for about £50.  It's worked fine for the small number of times he's used it.

Unless ofc you want to use the drone yourself, in which case get the s****ier one.

Either way, make sure it's under 100 grams so you don't have to bother with all the registration stuff.

Good point, certainly no point in doing anything ahead of a possible discount

Just the standard stuff; use it once or twice then put it away forever
