Just been told that I am being made redundant and finish on Thursday.

Ah well.

Anyone got anything going in the Sheffield area? I'm a Structural Engineer but would look at anything really as I need some income.

Seems to be a fair amount of struct eng jobs in Manchester. Not ideal but sadly that is the way it is now. Had to leave Ireland, living in London and commuting out to Brighton.

Oh and wages are coming down so don't hold your breath for decent pay. Those days are gone AGAIN!

Tough, but its due to the fall in new and refurb build, something this shower dont realise we need a construction industry.

Got a call today off a chap looking for an aprenticeship for his son, sadly nothing doing.

Some money would be nice to go with the riding time, Mrs Wich still working so I have no real income. Otherwise it's nice to please yourself.

Sign on! they pay your rent, your council tax and you get 50 quid or so a week spending money. Plus, they pay your interview travel expenses.

Make sure you claim for your interview mileage BEFORE you go!

I'd only worked for 4 months as an IT contractor after doing an MSc, before i claimed all my stuff. Worked out very tax efficient in the end, despite the ridiculous amount of tax you pay as a contractor.

As a contractor I can state that you pay tax at the same rate as everyone else. It is handled in a different manner and you do get presented with large bills but it all adds up to the same thing.

Best of luck in finding a new job matthew.

That really sucks - Redundancy isn't all that hot if you've got kids and a mortgage to worry about.

That's pretty short notice if they told you today and you finish on thursday

I think you're doing it wrong. You should be able to pay less as a contractor.

If you are paying straight PAYE you pay employer's and employee's NIC which means you would pay MORE tax than the average person gonefishin 🙂

If you are paid PAYE then your rate is less than that of a Ltd Co to take account of Employers NIC so that it all balances out. At least that's how it works in the Oil & Gas industry.

Do contractors end up with the same take-home as normal employees then?

In IT, you get paid going on triple what the permies get gross. That's why we contract 🙂

Molgrips has noticeably cheered up now that he's got a job paying proper money again. 🙂

My sister was made redundant at the end of June. Yesterday she was offered a new job and she'll have more money than she had before. Lucky maybe, but she got her finger out and found a job that hadn't even been advertised.

I got made reduntant a few months back, (was working for an exhibition company), spent a month looking for work and found one back working in sales. I have today just been told that my probation period is over and they are happy with me and my sales figures, so hurray for me, oh and i am earning a fair bit more than i was in my previous job which is nice.
