so the battery in my watch had to be changed by "sending it off to seiko, that'll be £45 Sir"

alternatively, I, yes I a mere pleb, could remove the back with long nosed pliers, cafefully not damaging the VITAL (god help us all if it got damaged) seal, and fit one £4.50 battery from the same jeweller later, re-assemble and all is fine.....

Surely there must be more than one born every minute for them to make a decent living...

Do that to your Polar hr monitor and see how long it lasts, then how much it costs you.

if it's a waterprrof one be careful - mine used to steam up after I did a diy battery change and went swimming in it once. At least if you send it off they pressure test it again to make sure it's still ok (and guarantee it).

No try immersing it in water, just to make sure.

sending it off to seiko

What a load of bollocks. Means he'll take it into the back, leave it there for two weeks, then spend 2 minutes popping a new battery in and 'phoning you to say it's been done.

Reminds me, my Seiko needs a new battery...

I did managed to stab myself in the hand with a pen-knife, trying to get the back off it once, though! 😀

Tis all about the guarantee, I have an old TAG that needed a new battery, gave the watch and £45 to jewellers. Got the watch back and went swimming with it on and 6 months later watch fell apart. Back to jewellers and all replaced FOC due to seals failing, jobs a good un. If it's a good watch worth doing IMHO.

Local jeweller near me (Welwyn GC) has fitted a few batteries for me for free. Just pay for the battery and they do it while you wait. When I wanted to buy a jewelry type gift for my wife, guess where I went...

jeweller isnt covered to do the work incase they scratch or f*** the watch, so they either have to send it away, or sell you a suitable battery for a diy job.

well done you, you chose the diy option and it worked out ok.

City Centre Jewellers was asking £25 to put a battery in my swatch. I'm in the wrong trade!

After my last battery sourcing expedition, I gave up and decided on automatic watches from now on. There are some nice auto seikos around 🙂

youre supposed to do the same for g-shock watches, all to do with pressurising the watch apparently...

wouldn't even cross my mind to send a watch away for a battery, regardless of seal unless the seal gets destroyed in removal by definition. Theyre usually just o rings and just require a quick check, maybe a little silicone lube and re-assembly as they came apart. Pressure testing might be needed if it were assembled by morons or machine, but anyone with a hint of mechanical sympathy and knowledge should be able to do 99.9% of watches out there! The only prob comes if you NEED the guarantee and/or the watch is pressurised as it's a bit harder to re-pressurise DIY style, but not impossible.

Just our of curiosity, how would you go about that?

I was nervous about doing my polar because of all the 'send it away' stuff. Opened it up, there was an O ring and that was it. Big smelly deal.

If you want to pressurise it, you could try leaving it in the freezer, then opening the door and putting the lid back on when it's all cold and the air will be denser. When it warms up again, there'll be pressure inside. Simples 🙂
