MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Literally, curtains.. never had to buy curtains in my life. Not got a clue (it will be readymade, cheap n nasty, obviously, I ain’t posh).
So the width they state, thats for each curtain yeah? and if your window is about 2m wide, 167mm is ok?
So then the important bit, the drrOpppp. The room’s only radiator is under the window, so, unlike I’ve had for the past few years, I should have curtains that don’t cover it? Or will they look stupid on a wide window? Every single photo on the web shows floor length!
Thanks virtual partner! 😍

if the curtains are 167mm then i'd recommend getting about 18 of them, but other than that you should be fine 😉
No idea, not my department, but what I can tell you is that curtains down to the floor will cost twice as much and shorter ones and will block the heat from the rad when they're closed (if they're any good).
Bunnyhop to the Forum please

edit: I believe you want at least 1.5 widths per side - so a 2m wide window would need 2 x 1.5m.
Home Store n More have a good range ,that's where we got ours ,decent prices too.
It’s curtains for me, help!
Pull yourself together, man!
I know there are links c_g, but stw gives real world advice! ☺️
Curtains should be at least double the width of the window so that they are still foldy when closed. Decent folk get their curtains lined and po' folk don't, so you can tell the quality of an area by looking for lined curtains. The length depends on what looks best.
You can buy ready-made curtains from stores like John Lewis, Dunelm or even charidee shops but there are plenty of people in your town who will make up a set for you. If you live in Lancashire, fent shops will sell you cheap fabric and recommend makers.
Prepare your wallet for a shock.
According to my good lady, who makes such things, you should have twice as much material as the space you need to cover. Otherwise they will just hang like a bed sheet. You need the extra material to get proper pleats on them which helps to keep light out, heat in and prevents them looking like a cheap boarding house.
She sells them and gets repeat orders so I assume she knows what she's talking about
Perchy wins the day....again!! 😄

You just stitched up the gags for this thread, left everyone hanging...
@sarawak - what’s mrs.sarawak say about floor length? Will any lady visitor I may receive mock me if I go above radiator? (not a euphemism)
Decent folk
Them lot at the other end of the cul-de-sac?
My other half spent best part of a grand on some fancy, heavy, lined curtains.
You could buy half a bike for that!
The curtains were drawn but the furniture was real - Spike Milligan.

My intention is to spend no more than a Specialized tyre. That’s my guide for most inessential items 😁
Just get some £15 ones from Ikea
Some decent lined curtains will improve the acoustics in your house.
Very important for lovers of good music.
Probably also useful for Debz.
SWMBO says....
Just let the curtains touch the top of the radiators. Maybe an inch or so overlap is better than an inch or so short. If too short cold air comes down the windows into the room. A modest overlap prevents this while still allowing most of the heat into the room. And looks better, so she says.
You and I have been told!
(And get them lined. If you really want, you can get blackout linings which stop nearly all light coming in. Useful in bedrooms)
Eyelets or tab-top with a pole. Make sure you don't get the annoying ones that need curtain track and nasty plastic hooks. And triple check before you walk out the shop that you've picked up the right ones.
Pre Mrs Zip I just used to peg up a recently washed duvet case.
Handy place to have something large drying and each week I would have a the excitement of a different curtain.
Can you put the curtains inside the window hole? That's what we did. Blocks more light and cold air when closed and the warm air from the radiator is unimpeded. You do lose a little light when open though.
Excellent advice from sarawak’s other half there. The rail is too high, but I’ll move it down to where one was fitted before and a standard drop will be good to leave the radiator free. Thanks!
Need all the light I can get molgrips. Don’t need darkness or privacy as I’m not overlooked to the front. (I’m actually naked while painting the room) 😁
(not really)
Ikea eh...?
My work colleague just did this, he reckoned dunelm was too pricey and went to the range! What I don’t know about his recent house renovation isn’t worth telling.......
Waves.
Mrs. Sarawak us corrrect.
Measure the rail and the drop from the top of the rail ( lots of people make the mistake of measuring the glass).
Curtains should be double the fullness of your rail .
Ask in the shop as a pair needs to be at least 1.5 times (but in my opinion that's not going to look right).
If you're a cheapskate go for unlined with a pull up 3" 3 pocket taped heading.
A good shop will help you to choose the correct pack of ready made curtains for your window.
Going to the floor is indeed more expensive and possibly not needed in a bedroom.
John Lewis, Dunelm, Laura Ashley etc do a good range.
As for all you lot moaning about the cost, have you any idea about the amount of fabric, lining and work that goes into making a pair of curtains?
he reckoned dunelm was too pricey and went to the range!
Makes sense to me!

Whaddayamean ‘IF’??!

& my advice is to follow CG's advice.
We got ours from Dunelm Mills & theyr'e good.
(we had a quote from some individual with a fancy shop & I was like, 'we'll let you know' I think Dunelm were about £500 cheaper.
esselgruntfuttock - you get what you pay for.
I'm a professional curtain maker and I have customers who come back to me time after time and have kept their curtains for many years.
A good pair of well made curtains, lined with lining will keep in heat, keep out light, keep the noise levels down and there is the privacy factor too.
Dez - you a cheapskate - never :o)

Buy cheap, buy twice.
Dez - glad you've received professional advice! Top tip: I recently took a few pairs of no longer needed made to measure curtains to a homeless charity in Winch that has a shop. Was disappointed to be told that they weren't taking any more soft furnishings. Could be worth a punt?
Pre Mrs Zip I just used to peg up a recently washed duvet case.
In my first house I used one curtain in my bedroom and attached it by stabbing it to the top of the surround with two forks. Those were the days.
Just make sure you measure twice and carefully write down the required measurements. Failure to do this means I have a lovely pair of lined curtains which are two feet short of meeting the bottom of a large bay window - a very expensive mistake!
Have you not considered blinds? They use less fabric so you can stretch to e.g. a nice bit of William Morris stuff and they keep the heat inside the room.
Buy cheap, buy twice.
There you go Dez that's two rooms sorted!
