I've recently started seeing a guy who has introduced me to mountain biking which is all good. But recently I stayed the night at his for the first time and I'm just a bit concerned. His bedroom is full of bikes and bike parts and the rest of his house is a bit like a bike workshop. There is even a bike at the foot of the bed and I think that he probably would have had the bike in his bed if he wasn't trying to make a good impression. Anyway, I woke the next morning teetering on the edge of the mattress, while he was sprawled out like a starfish with his arm round the dog. My question is - does this bode well for the relationship....or maybe I asking the wrong target group?

Is he called Danny? 😉

For the bike related clutter:
It'll be fine so long as you accept, that is the way he is, chance is that is the way he will be.

For the dog: If you are to be the new member of the pack, then you need to establish you're position in the pack. Till now your BF was alfa male and his mutt alfa female, or Beta male/female.
You need to dominate the mutt and put it down the order making it a gamma, unless it's his alfa female, in which case he needs to stop sleeping with it and make it a beta female.

I'm not calling you a dog of course, but in the eyes of the mutt, you will be classed as one.

HTH

I'd take a photo of my bedroom to show you "normal" to a typical MTBer... But I'm embarrassed just how many bike parts and how much crap there is in here! hahaha

My GF has got used to it though... 😉

Just the bedroom, what about the kitchen or toilet, any bikes in there, if not then there's obviously room for more bikes ... yes? 😉

But seriously to the OP do you have loads of perfumes/products candles female crap lying round your house and cuddle a hot water bottle in the night?

When you get to the point you move in together you can make compromises. I did, bike stuff in the kitchen, hot water bottle in bed, dog and candles in the shed.

On a serious note.
However much you love your bikes.... unless you live in shared accomodation, bikes in your bedroom is weird!
I have bikes in the kitchen, frames and spares in the living room and spare bedroom, bike mags in the bathroom, but in my bedroom.... no!

Most of my stuff lives in my kitchen cos it's got a wooden floor and is very big but the road bike stays in the bedroom. Track bike is in the spare bedroom, wouldn't want to deprive any guests of the honour of having a bike in the room!

We currently have 2 bikes in the bedroom - both mine so its ok. I also don't bat an eye when I have to clean the barh after the SO has washed bikes in the bath. Perfectly acceptable imo.

See, for some reason that DOES sound a bit odd. Even though as a London resident in a shared flat til a couple of months ago I had all my bike stuff in my (bed)room.

My wife is away on holiday with girlfriends for two weeks. Both bikes are out of the shed and in the living room. I hope the oil stains come out of the carpet.

I usually have at least one bike in the living room but none in the bedroom as the two labradors might hurt themselves on it in the dark 😉

If he's in the 16 - 30 age group then it's totally normal, any older and the bikes should be working their way into the downstairs rooms. Evetually after the age of 40 they should (hopefully) be in a shed, cellar or garage.

Most single male mtbers I know just live in a glorified bike shed, avec beer fridge. crazy-legs ^^ being a good example.

As I'm just leaving that demographic, does that mean I'm supposed to change any time soon? Or is it just that my GF (of 6 months now!!!) is going to change me for the better? 😉

Nah... She's into bikes as well! 🙂

no bikes in the flat most of the time, but there are enough parts under and down the side of the bed to build a couple, including a set of bombers within easy reach 😀

Recently we moved to a larger flat so I could have a bike room. Prior to this we had bikes in our bedroom, living room and a spare bathroom. Prior to this they were in the bedroom, living room, on the landing and in the loft.
He's normal. Question: Are you?

My best road bike used to live in the bedroom as the shed was full.It did piss the missus off a bit.She also gets pissed off with the cutlery drawer being full of spares as well!!

At last! A male version of me! Bearing in mind that I live in a caravan: 1 bike in awning, 3 bikes in lounge, half of seating area taken up by wheels and saddles/seat posts, bike under my bed, crash helmets on shelf above bed, various batteries on charge, sweaty bike gear hanging around, STW on laptop, dog on bed.

Sounds quite normal to me.

3 bikes at the end of my bed. There are also enough spares to rebuild a road bike... and bike bag under my bed.

2 bike frames, a dozen wheels, many tyres, tool kit and a couple of forks in my 'walk in wardrobe'.

joys of being a student!

When I lived on my own the only place I could put my bike was in the bedroom, thanks to a thoughtfully provided bay window.

Spares were kept on an adjacent shelf. A few lady guests did pass comment!

I couldn't keep my bikes in the bedroom as the sex swing took up a fair space (especially in motion with a few ladies in the room).

is he normal? not if any of those parts are for 29ers or singlespeed!
[tries desparately hard not to mention 69er]

in any case, if his bedroom is already full then i think it's time he got a bigger bedroom 😉

"is my boyfriend normal?"

i've got good news for you; your boyfriend isn't 'normal' - he's so much more interesting than any 'normal' person. you're a very lucky woman.

normal people are boring, they have boring lives, they go on boring holidays, they clean their cars at the weekend, they list their hobbies as 'watching tv, going out with friends, having a laugh'.

(those are hobbies in the same way that 'cleaning your teeth' is a hobby)

your boyfriend is special, he has a passion that will burn like a fire for his entire life, he will experience highs that normal people cannot even imagine, and if you give him a chance he will take you with him.

his passion for cycling will keep him young, healthy, sharp and attractive for many long decades - as effectively as any fountain of youth.

encourage him, cherish him, and ask him to tidy his house a bit. he won't mind.

Well, his lifestyle might be uncommon (generally) but its harmless.

Therefore the truly useful question is not 'is it weird?' but 'can I live with or adapt to this lifestyle and can he live with and adapt to mine without one or both of us being miserable?'

People dont change, we just think they might.

However much you might like him if he lives like this and you cant hack it then it will grind you down long term.

Where I live looks a bit like your description and I am female and like living among my interests and pets. Reality is, I will never become a tidy person who lives in a version of Architectural Digest with white carpets and palid furniture. There would be too much grease!

Actually, I lied about the biscuit (for comedy effect*), what Missy really really likes is broccoli, indeed, she prefers broccoli to smoked salmon, 'tis true.

*a nod to the joke: On seeing his mate's dog licking its balls, man says "I wish I could do that", mate replies "Give him a biscuit and he'll let you"

I think it's weird

+1, unless there's nowhere else for the bike to be stored. I had to keep my bike in my room for most of my last year of uni and always felt like it was a bit weird 😆

When we were refurbished our house, i made sure it had a bike room for storing my bikes, but they still get repaired in the kitchen. There is currently a bike striped down in the kitchen waiting for a new frame.

But Mrs Nezbo (to be) knows that there are 6 girls in my like my 4 bikes and Mrs Nezbo and the Titchy the Rabbit in that order (sometimes the order of 4 bikes, Titchy and Mrs Nezbo)

So he’s perfectly normal to be, but I am sure he can be trained a bit 🙂

The fact that you can see the bikes and they aren't covered in a pile of dust and clutter and unwashed clothes, pizza boxes etc bodes well.

But the dog has to go !

I'm a bit short of space where I live.
I was lying in bed one day, looking up at the ceiling, when I suddenly thought, "Look at all that wasted space up there. If I raised the bed up, I could store stuff underneath."

There's a motorbike under that bed.
There's bike, motorbike and Land Rover bits in every room, but only ever one bike at home at any one time.
Do I win ?

i find it hard to believe i haven't posted on here yet.

between us, Jose and I have... 6 bikes, and 3 unused frames, in our one bed flat above a shop.

[img] [/img]

and its a carpeted floor, with a 3m x 2m square of wood patterned lino in one corner to keep the filth off.
annoyingly, we are finding we are going to have a very clean corner to the carpet.

Judging by the number of 'Don't buy from so-and-so' threads on here...you'd only get disappointed when your preordered boyfriend didn't turn up or turned out to be not quite what you ordered.

Surfboards, windsurfers, motorbikes in the garage, two bikes in the hall (3 when the gf is here), two in the kitchen, cars in the street. Bike parts on the desk in the bedroom, ST mags, NS, Guardians, books around the bed. Oh, and a 'decorative' surfboard in the sitting room. Radiators frequently obscured by lycra and neoprene. All this is a manifestation of priorities and loves for one definitely outside that demographic.

No bikes in the bedroom here, but to get to the bedroom you will have to pass numerous bikes. At the moment each evening there are two in the kitchen drip drying from the snow, not ideal as we have a small kitchen. Most of the others are in the dining room. Bike bits everywhere though. I keep meaning to get more sorted but it doesn't happen.
