So, whilst groggily ironing my shirt for work one morning I knocked the Iron onto the carpet. It was in contact with the floor for a mere second but long enough to melt the carpet and produce a nice candy floss effect when I removed it.

Anyone know of any good ways to reduce the imprint? Moving out soon so would prefer not to have to replace the carpet......

I did something similar when I was at uni. I cut a square of carpet from under the bedside table and swapped it for the piece with the iron mark on it. The guilty feeling soon passed.

The problem is you've melted the surface that's normally nice and fluffy. You need to brush the carpet to get it all standing upright, then very carefully use a pair of sharp scissors to remove the surface, little by little, checking you're not going too deep. It can be done fairly effectively (I know from experience, I ironed the carpet while making modifications to a powerkite).

Cheers for the feedback.

CK - brushing was along similar lines to what I was thinking but the scissors idea has made me hopeful i can hide it completely

Buy a rug.

Or do what I did when selling a flat we owned: place a bag over the mark. And ban Mrs North from ironing on the floor...
