anyone had this? blank screen, gets half way through restore and then crashes
Yep, no problem! Hold the home key down (one on the front) whilst iTunes is open, and the sync cable is disconnected at the Iphone end ONLY. Connect the cable to the phone while holding button down. Itunes should detect the phone is in recovery mode and reinstall software then restore your phone. I had this problem and the solution came off the apple website forums.
If this does not work try on another Pc with fresh install of iTunes to reset the phone, then update back on your own PC.
