Anyone here running a Jailbroken Iphone 3G?

Pros and cons of Jailbreaking?

Would you have done it if you knew then what you know now?

Cheers...

Cons - Apple are vindictive enough to deliberately make your phone into a brick if you do an update...

Mine's standard and staying that way. Not really worth the hassle or risk unless you're a real geek.

Not jailbroken here, mainly because I can't see any compelling reason to do so.

IMHO - most of the argument in favour of jailbreaking has gone with the arrival of the app store.

Most of what i see is reasons to Jailbreak, not reasons not to....

Suppose asking in a different forum may promote different response, will have to ask around and decide if its worth it....

Go on then Marmite - share it with the class.

What are the pros of jailbreaking it - what are the killer apps that you can run once you've done it?

richc, no i am clueless about whether it is worth it, what you get out of it.

Other than changing the appearance of the phone, wallpapers icons etc....video recording is about the only thing i can see, most people say it is great but then fail to really tell you why!

Mine is still unjailbroken, just after opinions as to whether it was worth it.

I've just read the link above and still no real compelling reason for my money (and also I'd be a bit scared of Apple bricking my phone!)

I'm no expert on this (which will be apparent to anyone that is!) but there were reports of Firmware updates killing jailbroken phones - it's not that Apple know about you - they just release an update which plays havoc with non-standard firmware. You apply the update to benefit from some enhanced functionality and you're snookered. There seem to be less recent articles on it - so maybe it's a problem that's gone away. DYOR

They know perfectly well what they're doing. It's deliberate no matter how much they may deny it. The only really good reason IMO is if you want to use it on another network.

Nice app I have only seen for Jailbroken phones is one that allows you to arrange your icons into folders.

Anyone seen anything similar on the app store?

Also jailbroken phones can have issues using PUSH

"Also jailbroken phones can have issues using PUSH "

IIRC the iphone doesn't have PUSH email yet although I'm not 100% on that. Apple released a statement after the 3G was released (shortly after I got one) saying it wasn't possible to use PUSH email yet, and I've not heard anything to announce that PUSH email has been sorted yet.

My non jailbroken 3g doesn't work on PUSH email, I have to manually check both email accs. I don't leave WiFi or 3G on all the time though so I don't know if that interferes with the PUSH email. In the year I've had it I've never once got email via PUSH, only when I check it myself

I jailbroke (sp?) mine but only so I could run the unlock and use it on a different network. o2 is completely useless for 3g - why Apple partnered with the network that has the least 3g service is pretty hard to fathom:

o2's as useful as a chocolate fireguard 3G coverage map

What network are you running it on Farmer_John? And what you paying?

You're right O2's 3G coverage isn't exactly fantastic.
But the ability to use BT OpenZone and The Cloud WiFi hotspots for free helps a lot. Do you get that with other networks?

I regularly get my email pushed through without any problems at all on a regular EDGE network. My phone chimes and there's a little red badge on the Mail button telling me how many are in my In Folder. I regularly listen to Cerys or Lauren standing in for Nemone on 6Music in the afternoon using iCarRadio on the normal network too. I wouldn't jailbreak mine, I'd lose the free software upgrades. The recent upgrade to OS3 removed most of the reasons for breaking one, like cut'n'paste, MMS, voice memos. More than happy with the way mine works, but really, really looking forward to next May, when I get my next upgrade. 64Gb iPhone, perhaps? Yummy.

Mine's jailbroken, but only so I can use the video recorder, so my phone can do this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/21291182@N00/3749886523/

Apart from that, and a handy little menu that drops down when I want to switch between 3G and wifi I haven't found many reasons.

Mainly wanted the video while my boy learns to ride his bike.

You can run a nice linux version on it as well once it's jailbroken.

GrahamS - I'm using Three.

They already have the biggest 3G network but are merging it with T-Mobiles to create an even bigger one. Three also have a (free) roaming agreement with Orange for 2G voice and data - so far I've not managed to find a place that I couldn't get a good signal.

Having said that, I use the SBSsettings app for iPhone that enables the user to turn off 3G without going into the settings - it's quite useful for extending the battery life:

Just read another good guide here:
http://www.hackthatphone.com/3x/read_me_first.html

The ability to get video recording on pre-3GS iphones seems like the biggest bonus to me.

Switching to another network with better coverage might be useful, but I'm still within my O2 contract period anyway.

Farmer_John: Out of interest, what do you pay for 3G access on Three? And is it unlimited? And do you still get Visual Voicemail on other networks?

OS3 certainly does push email - works with my yahoo mail account 🙂

i really don't see any reason to risk jail breaking unless you want to change network. I have no issues at all with 02, and there 3g coverage is fine in all the cities/towns i've used it.

I thought one of the advantages of it was being able to use the phone as a modem for your laptop.

Andy Paice.

I would guess your email provider does not support PUSH. The 3g has always supported PUSH emails. OS3 onwards provides PUSH functionality for other apps.

you can - i have been using my iPhone, Jailbroken, as a wifi hotspot for my laptop.

i googled for "iPhone tethering free o2", you don't even need to be jailbroken to do it

http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/18/how-to-tether-your-iphone-running-os-3-0-without-jailbreaking/

As for pushing, my iPhone pushes my hotmail and yahoo accounts every hour or whenever i check them manually first.

Just to add, Jailbreaking your iphone doesn't unlock its provider. it's a seperate process.

Tethering
SBSsettings
5 item dock
play DIVX files via VLC
apps for free
winterboard - skinning
emulators for games like monkey island
NES emulators
SSH access if you're into geekdom
etc etc

minuses:
have to wait 2 days extra for any software upgrades.
that is all.

The bricking thing is a fallacy, the only way that would happen is if you are stupid enough to attempt an automatic update on your jail-broken phone, and even then its not likely to happen. it'll just refuse to patch.

The push notifications thing not working is limited to *unlocked* phones being used on other networks. Quite separate from jail breaking. You have to jail break to unlock generally, but the two processes are different.

I would guess your email provider does not support PUSH. The 3g has always supported PUSH emails. OS3 onwards provides PUSH functionality for other apps.

Not from what I have read. The iPhone (even the latest OS3) has NO support for the IMAP IDLE command so doesn't support true push email.

Yahoo, Exchange and MobileMe use some proprietary magic to get something like push working, but it is not available to folk (like me) who use other email providers.

All I get is the ability to poll for email every 15 minutes (this is not the same as PUSH. It is perfectly acceptable for me, but it may not be for others).

I thought one of the advantages of it was being able to use the phone as a modem for your laptop.

You can do that with OS3 - though admittedly O2 (try to) charge you separately for tethering despite the "unlimited internet" package.

So where am I going wrong then? I have one acc with Yahoo.co.uk and PUSH works great with my Blackberry on that acc.

Other acc is hotmail via the mbox mail app. Never tried the hotmail with the blackberry as it want ed me to upgrade to thre £60 pa subscription hotmail service to get PUSH.

I'm with O2 business if that makes any difference??

Andy when pinches says:

my iPhone pushes my hotmail and yahoo accounts every hour

I suspect he is actually talking about Polling (which is not the same as push, where you are immediately notified of new email).

You should be able to set up the polling (aka "Fetch") on any email account.
Look at Settings->Mail, Contacts Calendars->Fetch New Data

Pinches

You have hotmail in the normal email functionality of the iPhone? I have to use Safari or easier the mBox app.

How have you done it so that you get Pushed Hotmail.....??

I can definitely select push for my yahoo account, and i get mail delivered when it arrives, though whether that just means the phone is checking every few mins I don't know.

at some point since april, I have also set up my hotmail account on the phone mail client, but you can't do that anymore due to hotmails restriction to use their plus thing. i deleted my hotmail account on the phone as it's mainly just junk that goes there.

Graham S

I understand what you are saying, the thing is where can you get Hotmail POP settings, as I was under the impression they weren't available....

I have to use an app for hotmail as you can't add a hotmail account as you can't get the settings.

I have yahoo and that pushes though there can be delays

I use MSGpush for Gmail notifications, this is a site that sends you a notification but you still have to open mail and manually retrieve, kind of a faux push, similar to the GPUSH app if Apple let it through..

I already have the phone set to 'PUSH but use FETCH @ 30min if PUSH is not available' and that doesn't seem to work.

I just tried setting up hotmail on the phones mail client rather than mbox mail and it seems to have worked, just have to wait and see if PUSH will work for it.

It works! Hotmail in normal email client on iphone, not a plus user either...

mbox allows all the folders though, wonder how.

Andy, push won't work for Hotmail, you'll have to fetch mail....

Push is for Exchange Server email, Yahoo email, MobileMe email

I use msgpush for gmail notifications to be pushed, that may work for hotmail also...actually no it won't think it needs to be imap...

Won't Google Sync allow you to get proper PUSH email from GMail?
It should do as it is an Exchange server.

It certainly lets me get appointment data pushed from my Google Calendar to the Cal app.

(Edit: Hmm.. looks like it doesn't. Weird.)

Mine collects new emails from gmail by itself. Set to push and 15 min intervals

Yup, collecting at intervals is Fetch (aka Poll), not Push.
That is what it falls back on when it can't do Push.

To see if you are getting real Push then go into

Settings ➡ Mail, Contacts, Calendars ➡ Fetch New Data ➡ Advanced

and check what it says next to your account names.
It will say Push, Fetch or Manual.
