We will be in touch
So I am going to get one of the new ipads from tescos when our vouchers come in in May. But trying to decide whether to bother getting a 4G one or not?
its mainly going to be used around the house, connected to wifi, maybe take it away with us when on holiday, and hopefulyl use hotels free wifi.
So do i need 4G? unless I want to use it as a sat nav? Wife and i both have iphones so i guess we could just change our data package on the phones and tether the ipad to the phone if we wanted 3G out and about?
isnt 4G only available in Slough and Wales anyway?
It's only 3G in this country. As for whether it's worth it, if you don't mind not having Internet access when not in WiFi range and don't need GPS then I wouldn't bother - you're better off putting the money towards more memory (assuming you weren't planning on the 64GB version anyhow). Retina app sizes are ballooning, especially games where some are already at 1GB each.
The ipad three is not 4G in the UK, it is HPSA+ compatible (think 3G+), this is not 4G. Lets just set that straight before the thread gets bogged down in it.
And no I didn't bother with it, and don't regret it. As my m8 told me (who got a iPad 2 with 3G), if you out and need the internet, your phone (supposing you have a smart one) will fulfil the same function.
Why would you use it as a sat nav? Doesn't you phone do it?
If you opt for the Wifi only version I don't think it comes GPS equipped.......

Yep - I got a Wifi-only iPad and did exactly that. I can confirm it works very well. 🙂
If you don't need the GPS then I think the question is really just "are you ever likely to be somewhere (away from wifi) with your iPad but not your phone?"
Wifi only plus 3 broadband dongle - pay as you go
works very well and as I don't often use it outside the home it perfect for low useage but with a good signal when required.
I can connect to the wifi hotsopt but the connection to this seems much less happy - logs on and off without reason
4G has no unified RF band, so every country will end up with different RF frequency 4G networks, which makes universal 4G products near impossible. The 4G in the iPad is just there for the existing US network. The only existing 4G UK network is O2's test bed in London (which I work on) and it's invite only right now.
However the 4G iPad will work on 3G networks pretty much everywhere.....
