What's the best offering out there?

Not overly bothered about 3/4G capability, but a fast processor, HDMI connectivity, large/expandable memory, hi-res screen, decent camera would all be good.

There's no tablet out there with a decent camera.

iPad is the best suggestion. 😉

Android just doesn't work well on 10" screens, there aren't enough apps made for tablets to give a good experience. Of course if you just want a web browser, email and to watch videos - crack on!

Expandable memory might be the sticking point, google are trying real hard to phase it out of android for various reasons.

I'd suggest looking at the Sony Xperia Z Tablet. Expandable memory, runs nice and fast, the camera is average, but not bad in Tablet terms. It seems to tick all your boxes.

There are more tablet apps coming out for Android, so things are improving on that front.

Another note 10.1 user here.

Love it, s pen is good for photoshoping, good screen, fast, descent speakers, good camera, expandable memory, multitalking, video editing...

Bloke in the shop told me to steer clear of SIM versions and get a mifi unit, which can cheaply be changed to 4g or whatever comes in the future.

Without getting into the iOS/Android debate, I've chosen the Google route and don't want to mix and match - hence no iPad. I've even (quite easily) convinced my 13yr old daughter to stop being a sheep and change to Android at her next upgrade.

I already have a Galaxy Note 2 and like it a lot, so a Samsung might be the obvious choice. Considering I like Samsung TV's too, the next one will be along the lines of this - and I believe they interact quite nicely....

Nexus 10 here, use it every day. Every app I use scales up perfectly, what specifically was being referred to previously in the comment about Android apps not scaling?

Higher res display than any iPad, micro HDMI out, double the ram of an iPad 4, the same crappy 5mp camera. Build by Samsung. Running stock Android is definitely a selling point too.

That said, there's a new one due to be announced anytime now. They may well even start selling the current ones off for crazy cheap, like they did the Nexus 4 recently.

Why would anyone care about the camera on a tablet. Especially a 10 inch one. The only reason I'd want one is for skype/facetime or QR codes. Other than that I think people who take pictures on an iPad at an event should be shot

Considering the generally dire state of eBay photos, anything that's capable of taking a photo that doesn't look like a Parkinson's sufferer aiming for a soft focus porn "smeared in vasilene" look will do the job?

Pretty much any known brand tablet should achieve that for you!

It seems my original post should have stated 'doesn't matter if the camera is a bag of shit' 🙄

Actually, that's a fair point. I shall retire to my container.

However I stand by my point of shooting people at events with them.

Why do they even put cameras on tablets... as soon as you use it to take a picture you look super special.

Because if you're in a video call with a sexy friend and you want her/him to see what is going on on the other side of your tablet you can switch them cameras and boom there it is!

Its quite nice having a 10" viewfinder tho, especially at concerts and stuff when you have to hold it right up in the air.

To be fair, putting stuff on eBay using a tablet is loads better than messing about with a camera/laptop or a phone (iPad in my case, but I can't see there being much difference with a large Android tablet)

Nobody other than official photographers at a concert should be allowed to take photos with anything. You definitely don't "have to" hold anything like a phone or tablet up in the air at any point. HTH.

I've been using a Nexus 10 since last Xmas and have generally been very happy with it. Only downside is that some Android apps don't work very well on the 10 inch screen the biggest problem, for me anyway, being with the BBC iPlayer. Also SkyGo isn't implemented for Android yet which is a pain if like me you are a Sky subscriber but hopefully that should be sorted in the next month.

Really the BBC's and Sky's attitude to the dominant mobile operating system is a disgrace. Too many Apple fanboys in both companies or else something more sinister and anti-competitive is going on.

Yeah, right. 🙄

Which dominant OS would that be, then? There's little difference in the market share of the two main OS, and one of those is hampered by the fact it's somewhat fragmented, and riddled with different versions that can't be upgraded.
And have you any idea at all just how long it took the Beeb to finally get OS X and iOS friendly versions of its various apps available? The Beeb was very, very heavily biased towards MS and Windows, and Flash video. It's really only over the last couple of years they've got it properly sorted, and iOS and the iPhone came out six years ago, it was incredibly frustrating seeing Beeb content that was clearly biased towards Windows, with no attempt to produce iOS-friendly versions, and when queried, the Beeb just shrugged its shoulders, it's iPlayer app only ran Flash; pointless when Adobe never properly developed a mobile version that actually worked.

The new Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 Edition looks pretty damn good. Or the 10" Nexus.

A built in camera is also good when you go to galleries. I always find there is one part of a painting I like better than the rest. With a 10" screen in macro mode with the strobe flash you can go right up to the painting and just photograph your favourite part and cut out the rest.

I think you'll find it is - been using it on my Galaxy Note 2 for ages

Worth bearing in mind that in the samsumg movie hub the language is dictated by your network. So here in Spain I have no choice but to watch English movies dubbed in Spanish. Samsung said there is no way to change this. Which must be very irritating for expats the world over.
