MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Having just sold a bike I'm determined to put the money into something physical rather than the wife spending it on [insert various useless items/bills].
I'm not spending more than £400 so that means either a refurb 16gb v1 and money left over or a new 16gb v2.
Useage is going to be 95% home entertainment (web, apps, email, music and probably movies) with a little work stuff thrown in for good [tax] measure.
I'd like to think I might use it to show clients how our services can help them, so I like the idea of plugging it into a telly to display stuff. So can I connect the v1 via HDMI or is that only for the v2?
Also can anyone give me a good reason why I should buy the v2 (other than it being marginally faster) over the cheaper v1?
I'm not even looking at Android stuff yet so don't even mention them 😉
General consensus is that the 2 is not worth buying if you already have a 1 but is worth it if you are at all unsure about the iPad experience.
Just beware that it is Apple's way or no way unless you want to jailbreak it.
V2 is noticeably faster than V1 - and there are apps appearing that have additional features for ipad2 (due to extra processing and RAM and video graphics) - remember that the graphic capability is much uprated as well as the cpu/ram.
The form factor is also a lot nicer
As great as the first one is, v2 is a lot nicer. Though I would find it hard to recommend v2 to someone who owned v1, but I could not recommend v1 over v2 for a first purchase.

I'm already an iPhone user and, as such, used to Apples 'features' 😐 I just reckon that they're so simple to use that I might see how my 84 year old mum gets on with it - she may love the instant access to weather, news and even a bit of email!

Interesting.... thanks ericemel.

I bought my 80 year old mum one last year, she got used to it pretty well considering she had never used anything more technological than a (very simple) mobile phone. emails me stuff, plays games on it and surfs the web. she had wanted to use pages to make up some monthly newsletters but found that a bit too complicated. To be fair to her i agree, pages on the ipad is a very fiddly experience.
As for which one to buy I'd always go for the newest model for all the reasons that ericemel stated.

..but yes this is what my m8 who has an ipad 2 says. He also say don't worry about the capacity too much as your music will be on your ipod/iphone so you won't need to store that much stuff on the ipad. He also regrets buying the 3G one (but had to buy it as he would have regreted not trying it), say it's of not much use especially if you have already have a smart phone (he doesn't travel much and can't use it at work).
Otherwise he loves his ipad and apparently won't leave it alone.... he also bought a 2nd hand top spec apple laptop at the same time, and has yet to even look at it.
I'm saving for an iphone5 and a ipad3 (rumors say later this year)
front camera on v2? Good for Skype
Sharkbait - if you own an iphone you dont need to consider the 3g one as they tether seamlessly (not traditional tether but as a personal hotspot) and is included in your data plan. (well I not seen charges on o2 or 3)
Yes I wasn't going to bother with 3g as I reckon I could always buy a MiFi from 3 if I felt I needed it later on.
