Fairly careful with PC browsing & security - but don't really know the score on the iPhone...

Is the iOS vulnerable whilst browsing?

Vulnerable in what way?

It is all pretty locked down in general. There has been one fairly major security flaw so far that allowed code to be executed from PDF files (and was used on the http://jailbreakme.com site) but nothing malicious was reported as taking advantage of it and the bug was fixed back in August.

Nah, there's been loads. That was just the only one that got reported in the media. IOS3 still has a (different) critical zero day vulnerability.

There have already been 3 critical vulnerabilities reported with IOS4 but these have been patched.

Browsing with an iphone is just the same as any device. Be careful, and try not to visit dodgy sites if you want to reduce your exposure but at the end of the day it's vulnerable and always will be, just like any computer.

+1 - at some point soon iPhones will get hit with a virus/trojan, they're so many of them that they're a tempting target.

Android's got one already, although you have to download software from other marketplaces to get it.

There are no AV apps and unlikely to be any unless Apple puts something out as normal apps don't get access to the rest of the filesystem (which an AV would need).

Funny thing is whenever viruses are mentioned people always say "Get a Mac" or "Get Linux". iOS is based on Mac OS X and BSD Linux, and it is specifically designed to "sandbox" apps so they don't get access to key parts of the phone.

So it is about as secure as we can reasonably expect. No doubt there will be security holes, but there always are.

Coincidentally, this just dropped into my mailbox.

Hopefully that'll shut the smug ****ers up.

The same vague predictions by the usual suspects?

I think I am going to remain a little smuggins* 😉

*is that even a word?

The main thing protecting mac and linux users is the fact they are not using the market leading operating system. Well, that and the fact Windows is rubbish.

I dunno. I have to use W7 now and again and it seems ok.

I reckon you're probably ok to remain smug for the time being.

i think the proportion of PC users to MAC users is still so large as to make MAC attacks pointless. (something like 90%+ of home computers are still PC's - with Linux still holding more of the market than apple for alternatives.)

It's the little hand held dooberies that will be targetted I reckon. And quite right too, appsmug buggers.

Personally, I think Android will be targeted before iOS.

...or as Panda Security sez:

"Of the emerging systems, PandaLabs predicts that the threats for Android will increase considerably throughout the year, becoming the number one mobile target for cyber-crooks."

Funny you should say that.
One of my jobs is to run wireless scans looking for unauthorised access points on our sites and then track and/or crack any that I find.

While I'm running these scans I also collect probe data which is client machines like laptops, smartphones and the like looking for wireless networks that they know about. It's quite easy to work out from the probe data what the source device is and the vast majority of devices are HTC running Android. Far more than the few apple devices that I see.

So amongst my company's staff at least, the majority of phones appear to be running android OS.

Open to debate. I have linux fanboi opinions, that vented fully on an open forum shall cause a calamity amongst all the other sorts of fanbois........

Best to keep opinions under your hat I guess 😀
