Old article, not sure if we did this at the time. Health benefits of 1/4 of normal calorie intake for 5 days every month or two.

Always fancied giving it a go but never sure how it would fit in with a fairly active lifestyle.

It's less than a week out of a month. Just use it as a 'rest' week.

It cropped up in conversation.

Funnily enough I was reading this article this morning which is very interesting as my son has type 1 diabetes

Have been trying the 5:2 diet recently. That's 5 days eating normally and 2 days on restricted calories (500 for women and 600 for men). Have lost a bit of weight but maybe that's because I've managed to get out on the bike a bit after a winter pause..

The problem is, on the "2" days it's quite hard to keep intake that low and I end up with a mild headache some days and get a bit grumpy too so I can't see it being a long term plan. I find it strange that even though I go to bed hungry, when I wake up I'm fine...

5:2 gets better with practice IME. And is very effective at dropping spare weight while still allowing a normal diet most of the time (again, IME). Haven't bothered with it for a while though.

BTW we always added on to the basic calorie allowance when doing significant exercise on that day. Ie, 600 plus whatever the training used.

Something weird here though.

Haven't we always been told that TYPE 1 is an auto-immune over active response attacking the pancreas. So how can fasting help that ?

I do the 5-2 when I'm at work, when I'm off I generally eat what I want and put some weight back on. I went from something like 13st 10 to 11st 6, it certainly works!
I'll post what I eat on diet days if you like.
Just off to the pub.

rather than the 5:2 method, when i want to shed a few lbs (like now), i do the leangains method.

basically, for me its just missing breakfast and having it at dinner (lunch for the posh boys), 16hrs with zero calories, food within the remaining 8hr window.
have me oatibix and boiled eggs (not together) at dinnertime, then usual tea around 7ish. used to count the calories religiously with MFP but im used to it now so tend to know how its going. weigh myself same time each day rather than once a week for more reference points.

get a few tummy rumbles in the morning (hunger is your friend) but dinnertime soon comes around, find it far easier to do it this way.

Well I'm usually pretty sore afterwards so I can only really do it intermitently anyway. I know people who are well practised and can basically do it every day if they want. Usually I got a few days between sessions but anusol can help reduce the need to lay off.

Oh sorry, you said fasting. My mistake.

Tried fasting for a day but have only managed it two weeks out of the last month.

Being at work was ok but hard coming home at night when the habit is to graze and get dinner made.

Managed a 40 min gym cardio session and an hour light trundling at night without a problem and helped to distract from wanting to eat.

Concentration at work definitely suffered. Really kick started weight reduction though.
